Erastus Edung Ethekon has delivered his maiden speech after taking over as the chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
Speaking after his swearing-in, Ethekon sent messages to Kenyans, President William Ruto and Chief Justice (CJ) Martha Koome.
Ethekon said he is honoured by the trust placed in him to lead IEBC, which is vital to the country’s democracy.
He stated that free, fair and credible elections are the cornerstone of democracy.
“I extend my warmest congratulations to my fellow commissioners. I know the journey has been demanding, but however difficult it may have been, it was simply preparing us for the greater responsibilities that lie ahead. Today marks the beginning of our service to Kenya. we must be guided by our Constitution and the expectations of Kenyans,” he said.
Ethekon explained that the IEBC carries the solemn responsibility of ensuring that the voice of Kenyans is heard and respected.
He expressed gratitude to President Ruto, Parliament, and the Selection Panel for guiding him and the new commissioners through the appointment process.
He also appreciated Chief Justice (CJ) Koome and the Judiciary for swiftly handling the cases that confirmed the legality of their appointment.
He said the credibility of Kenya’s elections depends on IEBC’s commitment to the rule of law.
Ethekon said he is honored to lead IEBC as it begins the journey of service.

Erastus Edung Ethekon Pledges his Loyalty to Kenyans
He pledged his loyalty to the people of Kenya and assured that their voices will be heard and will count in the 2027 elections.
“My first loyalty is to the people of Kenya who hold the sovereign power under Article 1 of our Constitution. I wish to assure Kenyans that their voices will be heard and count in the coming elections,” he said.
He urged all Kenyans to ensure that they use the electoral process to build a peaceful, stable and secure democracy.
Ethekon emphasised that the credibility of the elections depends on a collective commitment to the rule of law, fairness and the principle that every Kenyan matters.
He said the Commission will ensure that it discharges its mandate with the seriousness it deserves.

Kenyans Asked to Support IEBC
He also called upon Kenyans, stakeholders and other institution to support the Commission as it plans for the by-elections and the 2027 general election.
“A credible election is not the responsibility of IEBC alone; it is a national responsibility. I urge you to stand firm in your commitment to democratic values. Together, we must build a resilient nation, one election at a time,’ Ethekon said.
“I appeal to every Kenyan to be part of this journey and to support us with your participation, vigilance and voices so that our democracy will be as strong as our collective belief in it.”
Ethekon and the other six commissioners were sworn in after President Ruto re-gazetted their appointment in line with the court ruling.
