How Kenyans Will Watch Football on DStv Without Paying for the Full Package

Dstv Launches Standalone Sports Streaming Package In South Africa

DStv has introduced a standalone Sports streaming package in South Africa from September 17.

Sports fans in South Africa will be given the option to pay specifically for sports content and not subscribe to the entire entertainment package.

The move forms part of a major overhaul of DStv’s streaming service following Canal+’s takeover of MultiChoice.

DStv Streaming Service Gets Five New Packages

Under the new structure, DStv will streamline its streaming offering into five packages: Starter, Select, Sports, Movies & Series, and Premium.

The introduction of the dedicated Sports package is one of the biggest changes because it allows customers whose main interest is sports to subscribe without taking a broader entertainment bundle.

The Sports package will cost R399 per month (KSh3,194), while Starter will cost R99 (KSh792), Select R299 (KSh2,393), Movies & Series R500 (KSh4,002) and Premium R799 (KSh6,395).

Changes Apply Only to DStv Streaming

DStv has clarified that the new packages and pricing apply to its streaming service and do not represent a restructuring of its traditional satellite television packages.

This means customers using DStv decoders will not automatically move to the new five-package structure when the changes take effect.

The distinction is important because DStv operates both its traditional satellite television service and streaming offerings. The new Sports package is therefore specifically designed for customers watching DStv through its streaming platform.

The move comes as DStv adapts to changes in the pay-TV market, where streaming services have made it easier for consumers to choose specific types of content and avoid paying for channels they rarely watch.

Canal+’s takeover of MultiChoice has also accelerated discussions around simplifying DStv’s product offering. The French media company has been seeking to reshape MultiChoice’s operations as it integrates the company into its wider African pay-TV and entertainment business.

Sports Fans Get More Choice

The standalone Sports package gives sports-focused subscribers a new way of accessing DStv content without having to choose Premium solely because it provides the widest sports offering.

DStv’s sports portfolio is anchored by SuperSport, which carries major sporting competitions across football and other disciplines.

Subscribers mainly interested in movies and television programs can choose Movies & Series, while sports viewers can select Sports.

The new five-package structure is scheduled to take effect on September 17, 2026, marking a significant change to DStv’s streaming strategy in South Africa.

What Kenyan DStv Subscribers Currently Pay

DStv Kenya currently offers sports content through its existing subscription packages and not a dedicated Sports-only package.

Subscribers who want to watch football have to choose a package that combines sports with entertainment, movies, local programming, and other channels.

According to DStv Kenya’s current package, DStv Premium costs KSh11,700 per month. It offers the most comprehensive content selection, including the full range of SuperSport channels and access to major sporting competitions. It also comes with more than 150 channels covering sports, movies, series, news, children’s programming, and general entertainment.

Subscribers looking for a cheaper option can choose from several lower-tier packages, although the sports content available becomes more limited as the subscription level decreases.

Package Monthly Price Main Offering
DStv Premium KSh11,700 150+ channels, complete sports offering including all SuperSport channels, blockbuster movies and premium entertainment
DStv Compact Plus KSh7,300 130+ channels, extensive sports and football coverage, including the UEFA Champions League
DStv Compact KSh4,200 120+ channels covering local and international entertainment, selected sports and other programming
DStv Family KSh2,250 Family entertainment, movies, children’s programming and selected channels
DStv Access KSh1,450 Local entertainment, including Maisha Magic Plus, reality programming and selected sports
DStv Lite KSh750 Basic television programming at the lowest subscription level
