The 2026 FIFA World Cup will offer the biggest prize money in the tournament’s history, with the champions set to receive $50 million (KSh6.47 billion).
Last December, FIFA unveiled a record $655 million (KSh84.72 billion) performance-based prize fund for the expanded 48-team tournament, a 50 per cent increase from the amount distributed at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, the tournament will reward all 48 participating teams, with payouts increasing based on how far each nation advances.
FIFA World Cup 2026 Prize Money
The winners of Sunday’s FIFA World Cup final (July 19) between Spain and Argentina will receive $50 million (KSh6.47 billion), while the runners-up will earn $33 million (KSh4.27 billion).
The winner of Saturday’s third-place playoff between France and England will take home $29 million (KSh3.75 billion), with the fourth-placed team receiving $27 million (KSh3.49 billion).
Teams eliminated in the quarter-finals (fifth to eighth place), including Morocco, Belgium, Norway and Switzerland, will each receive $19 million (KSh2.46 billion).
Sides knocked out in the Round of 16 (ninth to 16th place) will earn $15 million (KSh1.94 billion) each.
Teams finishing between 17th and 32nd place will receive $11 million (KSh1.42 billion), while nations eliminated in the group stage (33rd to 48th place) will each earn $9 million (KSh1.16 billion).

Prize Money Goes to Football Federations
The prize money is paid to each country’s football association or federation rather than directly to players.
Each federation determines how much is distributed to players, coaches and technical staff, while the remaining funds are often invested in football development, youth programmes, infrastructure and grassroots initiatives.
In addition, each qualified team will receive $1.5 million (KSh194.01 million) to cover preparation costs.
This means all participating member associations are guaranteed at least $10.5 million (KSh1.36 billion) for taking part in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, regardless of their performance.
The winners of the 2026 FIFA World Cup will receive $50 million (KSh6.47 billion), compared with the $42 million (KSh5.43 billion) awarded to Argentina after winning the 2022 tournament in Qatar.
The runners-up will earn $33 million (KSh4.27 billion), up from $30 million (KSh3.88 billion) awarded to France in 2022.

Medals and World Cup Rings
Beyond the cash rewards, the World Cup winners will also receive gold medals.
All 26 players in the winning squad, together with the coaching staff, will each receive a gold medal. The runners-up will be awarded silver medals, while the third-placed team will receive bronze medals.
The tradition of awarding medals has evolved over the years. Before the 1978 World Cup, only the 11 players who featured in the final received medals.
In 2007, FIFA retrospectively awarded 122 medals to squad members from World Cup-winning teams between 1930 and 1974 who had missed out because they did not play in the final.
Match officials selected to officiate the World Cup final will also receive commemorative medals.
Following the final, FIFA will present its individual awards, including the Golden Ball for the tournament’s best player, the Golden Glove for the best goalkeeper and the Golden Boot for the tournament’s top scorer.
For the first time, FIFA will also present World Cup championship rings to the winners.
30 rings will be awarded to the champions, while another 1,996 commemorative rings featuring a miniature World Cup trophy and engraved band will be made available to fans.
