The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has given illegal roadside occupants 30 days to remove their structures, goods and other encroachments from road reserves along four major roads.
In a notice issued on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, it targets traders and owners of unauthorized structures along the Likoni-Ukunda-Lunga Lunga (A7), Kilifi-Malindi-Garsen-Witu (A7), Maili Tisa-Kitale (B14) and Eldoret-Nyaru (B124) roads.
According to KeNHA, the directive aims to clear the road reserves to facilitate service road improvements, bus bay construction, and drainage rehabilitation works.
“The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) hereby noties all illegal roadside occupants, including traders and unauthorized structures, along Likoni – Ukunda – Lunga Lunga (A7) Road, Kilifi – Malindi – Garsen – Witu (A7) Road, Maili Tisa – Kitale (B14) Road, and Eldoret–Nyaru (B124) Road to remove their structures and vacate the road reserves,” read part of the notice.
KeNHA warned that occupying road reserves illegally is an offence under the Kenya Roads Act, 2007 and the Traffic Act.
KeNHA Targets Illegal Structures on Likoni-Ukunda Among Other Roads
The authority said the works form part of ongoing performance-based maintenance and road safety improvements along the affected roads, aimed at improving visibility, enhancing safety and reducing traffic congestion.
Affected occupants have been directed to remove their goods, structures, and any other encroachments within 30 days from the date of the notice.
KeNHA said it will remove any structures or goods remaining within the affected road reserves after the deadline, without further notice to the owners and at the owners’ cost, in accordance with the laws governing road reserves.
The compliance deadline is Thursday, October 29, 2026.
“Upon the expiry of the 30 days – Thursday, October 29, 2026 – any structures or goods, remaining within the said section of the road reserves shall be removed without further reference to the owners, in accordance with the relevant laws and regulations governing the protection and management of the road reserves, at the cost of the owner,” part of the notice read.

Places to Be Affected
The Likoni–Ukunda–Lunga Lunga (A7) route covers several busy trading and transport centres, including the Likoni Ferry entry, Ng’ombeni Junction at the Dongo Kundu Bypass, Ukunda Town, Waa, Tiwi, Msambweni, Ramisi and Lunga Lunga.
Meanwhile, the Kilifi–Malindi–Garsen–Witu (A7) corridor runs through Kilifi, Tana River and Lamu counties, with key commercial centres including Kilifi Town, Watamu Junction, Malindi CBD, Garsen Town and Witu.
The Maili Tisa–Kitale (B14) route includes areas such as Maili Tisa Junction, Moiben, Mois Bridge and the commercial approaches to Kitale Town, while the Eldoret–Nyaru (B124) route covers the road corridor between Eldoret and Nyaru.

What the Law Says About Road Reserve Encroachment
Under Section 49 of the Kenya Roads Act, putting up unauthorized buildings, stalls, and billboards, or leaving goods on a road reserve, is prohibited.
The Traffic Act also provides for offences relating to the unauthorized occupation or obstruction of public roads and road reserves.
KeNHA can remove structures and other encroachments that remain on road reserves after the expiry of an official notice. The authority clears any structures, goods, or other items removed at the owner’s cost.
The clearance is intended to create room for drainage rehabilitation, service road improvements and construction of bus bays, which KeNHA says will support road safety and help reduce traffic congestion.
