The Matatu Owners Association has assured the public that public transport services will continue normally during the planned Gen Z memorial protests.
Addressing the media on Wednesday, June 24, Chairman Albert Karakacha affirmed the Association’s solidarity with the victims’ families and urged matatu owners, drivers, and conductors to continue serving commuters.
The assurance on continued transport services comes ahead of the June 25 commemoration, marking the anniversary of the 2024 Gen Z-led protests.
“Matatu operations will continue as normal while respecting the constitutional rights of all citizens and public safety,” Matatu Owners Association Chairman Albert Karakacha directed on June 24 during an interview with Citizen TV.
The association moved to calm fears of possible disruptions to transport services, urging matatu owners, drivers, conductors, and other transport workers to remain peaceful and continue serving the public responsibly.
According to the Association, the public transport sector remains committed to serving the public while respecting the constitutional rights of all citizens.
The association emphasized that matatu operations will proceed as usual, even as Kenyans exercise their rights through lawful demonstrations.
Maintenance of the transport services, according to the Association, will support economic activities and ensure citizens can access workplaces, businesses, and other essential services.
