Sakaja Responds To Claims Joining ODM

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has responded to claims that he is planning to join the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party ahead of the 2027 General Elections to vie for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat.

While speaking during a prayer meeting for former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s African Union Commission (AUC) candidacy ahead of the AUC elections on February 15, Sakaja addressed Makadara MP George Aladwa and Homa Bay Governor, Gladys Wanga, who had urged him to join ODM.

In response, Sakaja quoted a Swahili proverb, saying, “Mwenye macho haambiwi tazama, na dalili ya mvua ni mawingu na mwenye maskio haambiwi haskii” hinting at joining ODM.

Aladwa and Wanga Urge Sakaja to Join ODM

Aladwa urged Sakaja while Odinga is busy with AUC politics he should decamp from UDA and join ODM.

“I want to say, Baba, as you go to contest at the AU, I am asking our Governor, Sakaja, to leave UDA and join ODM so that we can walk together.

In our ODM party, we love each other—there is no deceit, no hatred, and no jealousy. How many of you agree that he should join ODM?”

His sentiments were echoed by Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, who also urged Sakaja to leave UDA and join ODM.

For a while, Nairobi Governor Sakaja has been seen in public several times with Odinga, leading many to speculate that his closeness to the former Prime Minister is because he is eyeing the gubernatorial seat in 2027 under the ODM party.

Sakaja’s political dalliance with Odinga has caused jitters, particularly with Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, who is also eyeing the Nairobi gubernatorial seat. Owino has expressed dissatisfaction with the possibility of Sakaja joining the ODM party.

Earlier last month on Thursday, January 16, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino weighed in on reports that Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party leader Raila Odinga was supporting Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja.

While addressing the media using an analogy, Owino expressed disappointment, stating that it was unfortunate for a father to show more love to a child from outside than to his own.

“Regarding Governor Sakaja being favored by Raila Odinga, as I mentioned earlier, a father may love one child more than the other in a household.

However, it is unfortunate that this child is not from our house but rather a neighbor’s child,” Owino said.

Owino pointed out Sakaja’s political history of not supporting Odinga, mentioning that Sakaja came with questionable intentions. He emphasized that Odinga should acknowledge his true political supporters, including himself.
