Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu has found herself in the spotlight yet again following a video of her explaining the Finance Bill 2024.
Nyamu was captured in an undated video which gained traction on May 28 attempting to explain the contents of the Finance Bill 2024 and her view on the proposed taxes.
In the clip seen by The Kenya Times, the reporters questioning the nominated senator were left confused as she struggled to clearly interpret her understanding of the Bill.
Nyamu in the video was asked to opine her thoughts and general opinion about the controversial Finance Bill that is yet to passed.
While responding, she first appeared to stutter before delving into a scattered defense of the Bill.
“Well, my general opinion of the Finance Bill…. First of all, Finance Bill is being tabled in the National Assembly, not in the Senate. But what I know about the Kenya Kwanza administration, what we promised the people on the ground is that the economy will be bottom up,” said Nyamu.

Karen further went on to claim that the government was taxing wealthier Kenyans while relieving the common mwananchi.
“You can be lamenting that President Ruto is taxing us a lot which in contrast he has removed taxes for people at the bottom while increasing taxes for example for those people importing beds from abroad,” she added.
Senator Nyamu further called out people complaining about the bill asking them to first find out what it says and if there are any imposed taxes that affect them directly.
At the same time, the Senator threw everyone off after suggesting that the opposition was responsible for the Bill’s contentions and not necessarily based on facts.

“Find out what does this Finance Bill say. Stop believing the social media. We have opposition politics, and they must oppose the government. Whether they are making sense or spreading propaganda their work is to oppose the government and you are listening to them,” she claimed.
Following the remarks by Nyamu, Kenyans took to social media to react to her view on the Finance Bill.
The video which has since gone viral received mixed reactions from Kenyans with a majority blasting her for appearing so clueless on such an important national matter.

Reactions from Kenyans
Popular X influencer Omwamba kicked off the condemnation saying that he could not believe Nyamu is an advocate of the High Court of Kenya due to her response.
“UDA Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu amechoma. Yaani Karen Njeri Nyamu doesn’t know what is in the Finance Bill? I can’t believe Karen Nyamu is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya!” he said.
Another user named Eugene Abilla reacted to the video saying that the nominated senator should have stopped explaining at the point she highlighted where the bill is tabled.
“Finance Bill is tabled before the National Assembly and not the Senate. That’s where she could have stopped,” he said.
Jared Ongae on his part said, “This speaks volumes of the kind of leaders we have! And she is not the only one. Majority of those leaders only know what they hear on social media that’s why you hear them say uncouth logic and you wonder how they go into those offices.”
Equally unimpressed was Mutumao Nkanata who while wondering how Kenyan leadership had stooped so low said that the Senator should have declined the interview.
“Senator Nyamu had a right & option of declining this interview on Finance Bill 2024 to spare herself & President Ruto such embarrassment,” he said.
However, a user named Kimurgor John came to Nyamu’s defense stating that she was right on who the proposed taxes are targeting.
“Karen Nyamu is very right, Finance Bill will be punitive to the rich, the people at the bottom of the pyramid will slightly feel the impact. I agree in totality with Nyamu,” he said.
The Finance Bill, 2024 which was published on May 9 has received a lot of opposition from Kenyans due to some of its contents and is presently undergoing public participation.
