Former Laikipia North Member of Parliament (MP) Mathew Lempurkel is dead.
Lempurkel passed away while undergoing treatment following a tragic road accident that occurred earlier this week in Rongai, Kajiado County.
Lempurkel sustained serious injuries in the accident that occurred six days ago.
He was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi.
Lempurkel succumbed to his injuries on Sunday, August 24, after efforts to stabilize his condition failed.
Former Deputy President (DP) Rigathi Gachagua has mourned Lempurkel as a person whose legacy will live forever despite his death.

ODM also sent condolences to his family, recalling his tenure in Parliament

Mathew Lempurkel Term in Parliament
Lempurkel served as Laikipia North MP from 2013, having been elected on an ODM ticket, until 2017.
He lost the seat to Sarah Korere in the 2017 general election, and she has since been serving as the Laikipia North MP.
He was a defender of indigenous land rights and an advocate for marginalized communities in northern Kenya during his time in office.

Assault Case & Detention
Lempurkel hit the headlines when he was sentenced to one year in prison in November 2021 for assault in a case against his successor.
Senior Principal Magistrate Hellen Onkwani said the prosecution had proved beyond a reasonable doubt that he committed the offence.
She ruled that Lempurkel be jailed for 12 months with no option for a fine.

Lempurkel served his sentence for forty-five days at Kamiti Maximum Security Prison.
He appealed his detention and was released on a KSh100,000 bond on December 20th.
Lempurkel ditched the ODM party in November 2023 for the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
Former Garissa North MP Dead
His deaths come after former Garissa North MP, Abdikadir Hassan Yussuf, died on Friday, August 22nd.
Yussuf’s passing was announced by Fafi MP Abdikarim Osman.
The former legislature reportedly died while on his way back to Kenya from Australia.
