The Kenya Meteorological Department (Kenya Met) has released a five-day weather forecast for the week starting August 31 to September 4.
According to the weatherman, Kenyans across the country should prepare for moderate rainfall, a continuation of the cold season and sunny intervals during this period.
Kenya Met in the forecast noted that areas within the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the South-eastern lowlands and the Rift Valley will experience intermittent cold and cloudy conditions.
The Highlands East of the Rift Valley include the counties of Nairobi, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka Nithi.
Counties in the South-Eastern Lowlands include the Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta.
Areas to Experience Cold Conditions
In the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the counties are Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, West Pokot and Bomet.
These counties will have a chance of showers over a few high-ground areas in the afternoon hours and night.
The Highlands West of the Rift Valley will experience the lowest minimum temperatures, with temperatures dropping to between 5°C and 8°C.
Their maximum temperatures will be ranging from 26°C to 29°C.

Kenya Met Lists Regions to Receive Rains
However, rainfall is expected to continue over some parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, Western region and the Coast.
The Lake Victoria Basin, Western Region and the Coast includes Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, Mombasa, Tana River, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale Counties.
The Rift Valley, Lake Victoria, and Western regions will experience showers and thunderstorms in a few areas during the afternoon, with some locations also receiving showers at night.
These areas will experience maximum temperatures between 30°C and 33°C, while minimum temperatures will range from 28°C to 30°C.
The coast will have a chance of showers in a few areas during both the day and night, with maximum temperatures remaining constant at 30°C. Minimum temperatures in this region will range from 21°C to 23°C.

During the same period, counties in the North-Eastern region, including Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo counties, along with the South-Eastern lowlands, will remain dry, experiencing sunny intervals during the day and partly cloudy skies at night.
Maximum temperatures will range between 36°C and 37°C, while minimum temperatures will range from 15°C to 17°C.
Short Rain Seasons
The Kenya Met on August 28 stated that some parts of the country including the Central and Eastern regions will experience “Short Rains” on October-November-December (OND).
The highest seasonal rainfall amounts (greater than 700mm) are normally recorded over the Central highlands.
During OND 2024, the western sector of the country is expected to receive near to slightly above average rainfall, while the central parts of the country and isolated areas over northeast and southeastern lowlands are likely to receive near to below average rainfall.
The Coastal region, most of the Northeast and most of the Southeastern lowlands are expected to receive below average rainfall.
