North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Secretary-General Mark Rutte has reaffirmed the organization’s unwavering support for Ukraine, warning European leaders not to be sidetracked by other geopolitical disputes.
Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Mark Rutte stressed that Ukraine’s defence remains critical to the security of both Europe and the United States
NATO’s Commitment to Ukraine
Rutte called on European leaders to keep Ukraine at the top of their security agenda, emphasizing that the war in Ukraine remains the alliance’s most urgent priority.
“So Ukraine should be our priority number one, and then we can discuss all other issues, including Greenland. But first Ukraine, because it is critically important for the security of Europe and the United States,” said Rutte.
Rutte’s remarks underscored the importance of long-term European unity in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

He emphasized that sustaining military, financial, and humanitarian support for Ukraine is essential not only for Kyiv’s survival but also for the stability and security of the European continent as a whole.
Urgent Call for Sustained European Support
Rutte has also warned that while diplomatic efforts and financial support, including the EU-led €90 billion package, are important, the immediate focus should remain on ensuring Ukraine has the resources to defend itself.
“If we Europeans here in NATO think that because of €90 billion or because the peace process is moving in the right direction, we can forget about defending Ukraine, don’t. They need our support now, tomorrow, and the day after,” said Rutte.
Highlighting NATO’s integrated defense structure, Rutte stressed that Europe must continue to strengthen its capabilities alongside the US, noting that American forces remain heavily invested in European defense.

Greenland Dispute Should Not Overshadow Ukraine War
The NATO Chief has also cautioned European leaders against allowing tensions surrounding Greenland to distract them from the security challenge posed by the war in Ukraine.
According to Rutte, Europe’s security depends on unity and focus, particularly at a time when Ukraine continues to rely heavily on sustained military and financial support from its allies.
“On Greenland, because we have to make sure that that issue gets solved in an amicable way. But the main issue is not Greenland. Now, the main issue is Ukraine,” he said.
Trump to Address leaders amid Greenland Row
US President Donald Trump is set to deliver a speech in Davos on Wednesday. He is expected to meet with European leaders to discuss Greenland.
Trump’s speech comes as NATO officials urge allies to avoid distractions and remain focused on supporting Ukraine, highlighting the delicate balance between diplomatic disputes and urgent security priorities facing Europe.
