Russian Strikes Hit Ukraine’s Energy Infrastructure, Kyiv Faces Blackouts
The primary targets of the strikes were Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, including facilities supporting nuclear power plants.
Substations linked to Ukraine’s nuclear power plants were hit, but the facilities remained operational, Ukrenergo CEO Vitaliy Zaichenko told the Kyiv Independent.
On January 20, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a special energy coordination call with government officials, regional authorities, military leaders, and representatives from the energy sector to assess recovery efforts following Russian strikes.
He confirmed that restoration work has already begun in all affected regions and thanked specialists involved in the operations.
According to Zelenskyy, the most severe disruptions are in Kyiv, parts of Kyiv Oblast, and Kharkiv, while ongoing work continues in the Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, Sumy, Chernihiv, Odesa, and Rivne regions.
“In all regions hit by Russian strikes, restoration work has already begun. I thank all the specialists involved. As of now, the greatest difficulties are in Kyiv, part of the Kyiv region, and Kharkiv,” read part of the statement.

The Commander of the Ukrainian Air Force also briefed Zelenskyy on how air defense systems were used to intercept Russian missiles and provided initial insights into the enemy’s updated tactics.
Zelenskyy instructed the military to engage international partners, particularly the United States, to provide detailed reports on Russia’s changed strike patterns and its specific targeting of energy infrastructure.
He stressed the urgent need for air defence missiles, noting that timing is critical for both requests and deliveries.
Zelenskyy also stated that some of the missiles used in the strikes were newly produced this year, underscoring the importance of global sanctions and restrictions on Russia’s supply of critical components.
