Early Life & Education
Amos Kimwomi Nyaribo was born in Magwagwa, located in North Mugirango Constituency of present-day Nyamira County, into the Abagirango clan, a respected lineage within the Gusii community.
He began his education in the late 1960s, enrolling in a local primary school in Magwagwa. After completing his Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) in the mid-1970s, his strong performance earned him admission to a leading secondary school in the region.
He successfully completed his O-Level education around 1978 and advanced to A-Levels, which he completed by 1980.
To further strengthen his credentials, Nyaribo undertook advanced professional training, qualifying as a Chartered Accountant by the late 1980s.
Career
Professional career
After earning his Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) degree and completing his Chartered Accountant certification by 1988, Amos Nyaribo embarked on a professional path that spanned both the public sector and private enterprise.
In 1989, Nyaribo began his career in government service, taking up roles in various state corporations and non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
During the late 1980s and early 1990s, he worked as a financial officer and later as a senior manager in programs focused on rural development and institutional reform.
In 2006, alongside his public service career, Nyaribo expanded into the private sector as an entrepreneur.
He invested in real estate development in Nyamira and Kisii towns, tapping into the growing demand for residential and commercial properties.
In the same period, he founded a dry-cleaning business, which provided employment opportunities for local residents and helped diversify his business portfolio.
From 2006 to 2012, Amos Nyaribo balanced his private ventures with advisory work for non-governmental organizations, particularly those focused on rural empowerment and infrastructure improvement.
Political career
In 2017, Nyaribo made the pivotal decision to enter elective politics. Initially, he had declared an interest in running for the governorship under the Amani National Congress (ANC).
However, in the final weeks before the election, he shifted strategy and joined forces with John Obiero Nyagarama, who was seeking reelection as governor under the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
Nyaribo became Nyagarama’s running mate, a move that significantly boosted their ticket’s appeal.
They won the 8 August 2017, General Election, with Nyaribo officially assuming the role of Deputy Governor of Nyamira County on August 22, 2017.

As Deputy Governor between 2017 and 2020, Amos Nyaribo was assigned oversight of the county’s Finance and Economic Planning department.
His key task was to improve revenue collection, control expenditure, and address payroll irregularities.
In 2018, while Governor Nyagarama was abroad, Nyaribo initiated a bold anti-corruption measure by dismissing several payroll officers following an internal audit that exposed the existence of ghost workers drawing county salaries.
Although this move demonstrated his commitment to accountability, it caused friction between him and Nyagarama’s close allies, marking the start of tensions within the county executive.
On December 18, 2020, Governor Nyagarama passed away from complications related to COVID-19, and as mandated by the Constitution, Nyaribo assumed leadership and was officially sworn in as Nyamira’s second Governor on December 29, 2020.
In his first year as governor (2021), Nyaribo prioritized fiscal reforms, noting that over 60% of county revenue was being consumed by salaries, far above the 35% ceiling recommended by the Public Finance Management Act.
He launched initiatives to streamline payroll management, eliminate ghost workers, and improve efficiency in service delivery.
As he approached the 2022 General Election, Nyaribo shifted his political allegiance. Having initially been aligned with ANC, he formally joined the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) in early 2022, positioning himself within the Azimio la Umoja coalition led by Raila Odinga.
