Civil servants in Kenya must register with the Social Health Authority (SHA) to access their medical cover. Employers handle the contribution deductions, but civil servants are still required to complete the registration process.
Contributions are made automatically through payroll deductions, calculated at 2.75% of the gross salary. This streamlined approach eliminates the need for manual payments and ensures that all eligible civil servants are consistently enrolled in the scheme.
For individuals earning lower salaries, there is a minimum contribution of KSh300 per month, making it inclusive and accommodating to all salary brackets.
SHA services for civil servants
The funds collected through these deductions are channelled into the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF)—one of the funds administered by SHA.
These funds are then used to purchase healthcare services from approved and contracted providers, ensuring the availability of quality care through a network of empanelled healthcare facilities.
Another major advantage is that there is no waiting period. Civil servants can begin accessing medical services immediately upon registration.
