Wiper leader and former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka is said to have collapsed amid the 2023 Azimio protests led by Opposition Chief Raila Odinga.
ODM Communications Director, Philip Etale on Wednesday May 21 vividly recalled the incident in Nairobi’s Eastlands, saying his car was right behind Kalonzo’s and he saw what happened.
According to Etale, the Wiper leader should find no reason to sit down to have any discussions with the former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who he accused of being behind the whole incident.
“Hon. Kalonzo Musyoka, perhaps you may have forgotten one incident that almost took you out courtesy of Riggy G’s firm orders. “
“My car was two behind yours as we demonstrated in 2023 over the high cost of living,” Etale explained.
Where the incident happened
Etale recounted that the incident happened as the demonstration procession was passing through Riverside, on to Pangani, then to Juja Road, with a reception of angry Kenyans.
The over 500 vehicles were escorted by thousands of Kenyans chanting anti-government slogans and were then confronted by anti-riot police officers who shortly brought in water cannons which emerged from alleys in Mathare and Huruma Estate.
After defiantly continuing with the processions, with music of encouragement being played, a tear gas canister was lobbed into Kalonzo Musyoka’s car.
“We were confronted by lorry loads of overzealous anti-riot police officers. Shortly thereafter, water cannons emerged from alleys in Mathare and Huruma Estate.”
How Kalonzo Musyoka collapsed
“As we defiantly continued with the processions with DJ Spider playing music of encouragement, the cops lobbed several tear gas canisters into your car, shattering the back shield and windows, “Philip Etale says.
For some minutes, Kalonzo Musyoka passed out as the gas filled his car, and with the help of some youths and his security personnel, he was helped, and he came out in a bad state,” Etale stated.

“You passed out for some minutes because of the gas that had filled your car. Your security personnel, with the help of some youths, helped you out.”
Etale’s trauma
The political communications guru also recalled how their vehicle was attacked by cops to suffocate them.
He was traumatized by the situation since he had breathing problems because of his previous experience with COVID-19, having been admitted to the hospital for a whole month.
“COVID-19 had me admitted to the hospital for a whole month, ten days in the ICU.”

Moreover, Etale claimed they got reports from the police that the instructions were given by Rigathi Gachagua.
“Rigathi Gachagua gave explicit instructions to deal with demonstrators and even ‘if possible’ take some out,” he confirmed.
