Jerusha Mongina Momanyi is a seasoned Kenyan politician, currently serving as the Woman Representative for Nyamira County.
Early life and educational Background
Jerusha Mongina Momanyi was born on December 12, 1956, in Nyamira County, where she spent her formative years.
She began her education at Nyagancha DEB Primary School, where she completed her primary studies in 1974.
In 1982, she enrolled at Rigoma Secondary School, where she studied until 1985, attaining Division II in the Kenya Certificate of Education examinations.
Pursuing further studies, she joined Masaba High School between 1988 and 1989, where she completed her Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education (KACE).
Determined to enter the teaching profession, she joined a Teachers’ Training College in 1990 and graduated with a Primary 1 (P1) certificate in 1992, qualifying her as a primary school teacher.
Momanyi later advanced her studies at the University of Nairobi between 2003 and 2008, earning a Bachelor of Education degree.
She later returned to the University of Nairobi, where she embarked on a Master’s degree in Distance Education.

Professional career
Jerusha Momanyi’s professional journey began in 1992 when she was posted to Itongo Sengera Primary School, where she served as a teacher until 1994.
She later transferred to Rigoma Primary School, where she taught from 1995 to 2008, a period that cemented her reputation as a dedicated educator.
In 2009, she transitioned to Rigoma Secondary School, where she taught until 2012.
Beyond the classroom, she became active in teachers’ welfare and trade union matters.
Between 2006 and 2010, she served as Treasurer of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), Nyamira Chapter, where she was instrumental in advancing the rights and welfare of teachers within the county.

Her leadership abilities and influence expanded further when she was appointed to the Nyamira County Assembly Board, where she served from 2013 to 2016.
Political career
In 2017, Jerusha Momanyi successfully contested for the seat of Women Representative for Nyamira County on a Jubilee Party ticket during the general elections and entered the 12th Parliament, where she served until 2022.
During this first term, she was elected Vice Chairperson of the Parliamentary Broadcasting and Library Committee and became a member of both the Education and Research Committee and the National Cohesion and Equal Opportunity Committee.
In these roles, she championed education reforms, advocated for gender equality, and promoted social cohesion.
In the 2022 general election, she retained her seat as Women Representative for Nyamira County, securing a second term in the 13th Parliament.
In her second term, Momanyi has remained an active member of the Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA), participating in campaigns against gender-based violence and programmes aimed at empowering women and youth.
2027 Gubernatorial Bid
Jerusha Momanyi has declared her candidacy for Governor of Nyamira County in the upcoming 2027 general elections.
Her campaign is gaining momentum, especially among women voters, supported by a grassroots movement called the “Green Army”.
