The State Department for Diaspora Affairs has collaborated with different farms in the United Kingdom (UK) to recruit and engage 1,000 Kenyan youth in seasonal worker’s project.
Diaspora Principal secretary (PS) Roseline Njogu noted that recruitments were being done through the HOPS Labour Solutions recruitment agency.
Further, she announced that over 400 Kenyan youth with qualifications in agriculture had already taken up the seasonal jobs in the past six months adding that an additional 1000 Youths were expected to benefit from the opportunity in 2024.
“Excited to see these seasonal workers project in the UK has really taken off! In the last 6 months, over 400 Kenyan youth with qualifications in agriculture have taken up seasonal opportunities in the UK under this partnership.
“Another 1,000 or so are expected to benefit in 2024. Grateful for the support of SD TVET, SD Youth (and Youth Fund), SD Labour and SD Public Service,” said Njogu.

Details of the 1,000 Seasonal Jobs
Earlier in November 2023, the Kenya National Youth Service (NYS) announced job opportunities for its graduands in the United Kingdom under ‘The seasonal Worker Scheme’ beginning December 2023.
According to the NYS statement, the jobs were specifically targeting NYS graduands with agriculture qualifications as they would be working in horticultural farms.
Further, NYS explained that successful candidates would work in the fruit and vegetable sector abroad for a period of six months.
“The Scheme dubbed “The Seasonal Worker Scheme (SWS)” provides farmers and growers in the UK with a source of labor to meet their workforce demand for seasonal positions within the horticulture sector. The successful recruits will reside and work in the fruit and vegetable sector for a period of Six months tentatively from February 2024,” NYS noted.

Requirements and How to Apply
Interested applicants were required to be willing to reside and work in the UK for a period of six months and return at the end of the period.
In addition, the advertisement detailed that the applicants should be able to finance their passport, visa application and have a sustainability amount to support their living costs before receiving the first payment.
“Passport processing fee, approximately Ksh6,550, Return ticket (direct): (£1100) Ksh192,500, Visa Application Fee (£256) Ksh45,325, Sustainability amount (£150) Ksh30,000 to support your living costs until first pay is received,” added the statement.
Other listed qualifications included being highly motivated in practical farming, being medically and physically fit, and being able to show up for interviews.
To apply, interested applicants should fill their details on the google form provided on the NYS website when recruitment opens.
