The ministry of Education (MoE) will order all universities that have issued admission letters to first year students set to join the 2024 intake to recall the letters.
Speaking before the National Assembly Education Committee officials from the ministry indicated that the admission letters were showing the entire payable school fees instead of what each student is expected to pay.
At the same time, the ministry stated that it would address the school fees concern reflected on the admission letters.
This followed uproar from members of the public over fee structures that were sent to students for admission, some reflecting more than Ksh600,000 payable fees per year.

Universities Show Fees for 2024 and New Funding Model Addressed
At the same time, the ministry indicated that it would revise the criteria used to place students in the various bands under the new university funding model.
According to MoE, the Means Testing Instrument (MTI) is used to determine how much a student needs to place them on different categories under the new university funding model.
Based on the MTI assessment, students are categorized into different groups including vulnerable, extremely needy, needy, and less needy.
Further, this categorization determines the percentage of funding the student will receive through scholarships, loans, and household contributions.
However, the committee was told that there were gaps in the process caused by lack of enough information about the students. To rectify the matter, the ministry promised to collect more information on the students and offer them scholarships appropriately.
“Classification is undertaken using MTI and the whole submission of appeals also points to the fact that we acknowledge that there are some gaps in the process. some of them were caused by not getting appropriate information and some by the status of APIs
“Through the appeals process, we try to engage the students to provide us with as enough information as possible to help us asses their status,” stated MoE officials.
