Public Transport Federation Calls for Tougher Safety Measures After Deadly Nganya Crash
The Federation of Public Transport Sector (FPTS) has sent its condolences to the families affected by the tragic Nganya accident on Enterprise Road in Nairobi.
In a statement, the federation said the incident serves as a reminder of the need for greater professionalism, continuous training, and strict adherence to public service vehicle (PSV) safety regulations across the transport sector.
“Dangerous driving, Manyoka stunts, and bus crews hanging on doors continue to place lives at risk,” the statement warned.
FPTS noted that while Nganya culture remains a key part of Kenya’s urban transport identity, the safety of passengers and road users must always take priority over entertainment and showmanship.
The federation urged SACCOs and transport operators to strengthen driver and conductor training, improve discipline among crews, and promote responsible conduct on the roads.

Ruto Allows Use of Graffiti on Matatus
President William Ruto directed the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to create an enabling environment for matatu operators to continue using artwork and graffiti on their vehicles.
Speaking at State House in Mombasa on May 22, Ruto said that the designs must, however, uphold road safety standards and respect for other road users.
The President said the concern had been raised by industry players who were reportedly being required to remove all graffiti from their matatus.
“The industry is telling me that they have been told they must remove all graffiti from their matatus, and I’m asking myself why,” Ruto said.
He added that the use of graffiti is one way the recognize the role of creativity and self-expression in the transport sector.
7,198 Involved in Accidents Across Kenya in 2026
Road safety remains a major concern in Kenya, with official National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) data showing thousands of people affected by traffic accidents in the first months of 2026.
Between January 1 and April 1, 2026, a total of 7,198 people were involved in road accidents across the country. Pedestrians and motorcyclists recorded the highest number of fatalities among road users.
The year began with a worrying trend, with 287 deaths recorded on Kenyan roads within the first 20 days of January 2026.
In response to a series of fatal crashes linked to speeding, the NTSA on January 19, 2026, imposed suspensions and strict compliance measures on six public transport operators.
Road safety concerns have also extended to the motorcycle sector. On April 21, 2026, NTSA launched a nationwide boda boda safety campaign following a rise in rider fatalities and injuries.
The authority warned that deaths involving motorcycle riders could continue increasing if additional safety interventions are not implemented.
On June 2, 2026, NTSA updated its Road Safety Action Plan, setting a target of reducing road traffic deaths and serious injuries by 50 per cent by the year 2030 through enhanced enforcement, public awareness, and safer transport systems.
