A survivor of the accident which occurred along Nakuru Eldoret Highway at Salgaa has revealed last moments before the fateful incident.
Speaking on a hospital bed at the Nakuru Referral facility, Mercy Murgor who is among the eight people who were injured following the Saturday, May 25 accident stated that the driver of the 14-seater matatu ferrying them may have fallen asleep.
She said the passengers had noticed that the driver had been quiet for a while, leading to the suspicion that he might have been sleeping.
“When we reached Salgaa, we came smoothly, having conversations among ourselves. The driver was quiet. We decided we should initiate a conversation with the driver since it seemed as though he was asleep,” narrated Mercy.
The husband, who was also present at the hospital while Mercy received treatment, spoke of moments before Mercy got involved in the accident.
He said he had tried calling his wife at around 2 am to no avail concluding it may have been caused by network failure.

“I tried calling her at around 2 am and she did not respond. I was surprised and concluded maybe it was network,” he said.
He would later receive a call from one of the passengers telling him to go to the Nakuru County Hospital where his wife had been admitted following the accident.
Accident Survivors
Nakuru Referral Hospital Chief nursing officer Arphaxard Kemboi confirmed that the 7 survivors are in stable condition.
“Two of them had fractures, two had cuts on the head, but all patients are stable. We have taken two to theatre for fixing fractures,” Confirmed Kemboi.

The driver of the 14-seater matatu was treated and discharged. However, four individuals including three women and one man, succumbed to their injuries on the spot.
According to reports, the passengers were members of a church in Eldoret and were heading for a funeral in Makueni.
Salgaa Accident
The accident which happened in the early morning hours of Saturday, May 25 at the Salgaa blackspot area involved a trailer and a 14-seater matatu belonging to the Eldoret Crossroads Shuttle Sacco.
According to reports, the ill-fated matatu was travelling from Eldoret towards Nakuru when it collided with the rear of a mobile trailer.
Nakuru police commander, Samuel Ndanyi, confirmed that the driver of the truck fled the scene after the accident, adding that police are investigating the matter.

In addition, Kenya Red Cross confirmed the accident saying “A road traffic incident has been reported at Salgaa involving a trailer and a 14-seater matatu. Our first responders are en route to the scene,”
Nonetheless, the wreckage of the PSV 14-seater Matatu was stored at the Salgaa police station and bodies of the diseased moved to the Nakuru annex funeral home.
