The COMESA Competition and Consumer Commission (CCC) has issued a consumer alert regarding the recall of several Ford, Toyota, and Hino vehicles, warning motorists across the Common Market about potential safety risks associated with the affected units.

In a notice dated April 24, 2026, the Commission said the voluntary recall involves Ford Ranger XLT and Wildtrak models, Ford Puma passenger vehicles, and Hino 700 series trucks supplied through Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa and Toyota South Africa Motors.

“The COMESA Competition and Consumer Commission (the “Commission”) has become aware of a recall of various Ford and Toyota-supplied vehicles, which include Ford Ranger XLT, Wildtrak, Ford Puma, and Hino 700 vehicles,” read part of the statement.

Kenya and other member states have been advised to comply with the recall directive.

COMESA Warns Public Over Recall of Ford, Toyota and Hino Vehicles Across Member States

According to the alert, 438 units of the 2025 Ford Ranger XLT and Wildtrak models sold between February 18 and March 18, 2025, were recalled due to a possible failure of the Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve, which may lead to engine power loss, warning signals, weak acceleration, and potential engine failure, increasing the risk of accidents.

The Commission further noted that 26 Ford Puma vehicles from the 2023–2024 model years were recalled after it emerged that a previously applied software fix may not have been correctly installed, potentially affecting the vehicle’s restraint system performance in the event of a crash.

It also said that 58 units of Hino 700 series vehicles sold between February and November 2025 were recalled due to a defect in the fuel pump housing that could develop cracks under repeated high loads, leading to potential fuel leaks.

COMESA warned consumers in its 21-member bloc to exercise caution when purchasing or operating the affected vehicles and to seek verification at authorized dealerships as directed in the recall notices.

The Commission said it is working with manufacturers and member states to ensure that affected consumers are informed and receive appropriate redress, and urged motorists who require further information to contact the Commission directly.

Consumer Alert on Toyota Land Cruiser LC300 Recall

On March 25, the commission issued a consumer alert regarding a recall of certain Toyota Land Cruiser LC300 vehicles supplied by Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM).

The recall was triggered by a programming error in the Transmission Electronic Control Unit (T-ECU), which may prevent the detection and reporting of transmission faults.

The affected SUV features a 10-speed automatic transmission with linear solenoids controlling gear shifts.

According to Toyota, a solenoid failure under specific driving conditions may go undetected by the T-ECU and Engine ECU, potentially making the transmission over-rev in certain gears.

The automaker added that it could damage the transmission, reduce power at high speeds, and, in severe cases, lead to transmission fluid leaks, increasing the risk of a crash or fire.
