The COMESA Competition and Consumer Commission (CCCS) has issued a consumer alert regarding a recall of certain Toyota Land Cruiser LC300 vehicles supplied by Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM).
The alert issued on March 25 follows a statement from the National Consumer Commission (NCC) of South Africa, which reported that 1,846 LC300 models sold between 8 January 2025 and 16 January 2026 are affected.
“The COMESA Competition and Consumer Commission (the “Commission”) has become aware through a Press Statement posted on the Facebook page of the National Consumer Commission (NCC) of South Africa regarding a recall of certain batches of Toyota Land Cruiser L300. The NCC’s recall applies to 1,846 models sold by Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) between 8 January 2025 and 16 January 2026,” read part of the statement.
Kenya and other member states have been advised to comply with the recall directive.
COMESA Issues Consumer Alert on Toyota Land Cruiser LC300 Recall
The recall was triggered by a programming error in the Transmission Electronic Control Unit (T-ECU), which may prevent the detection and reporting of transmission faults.
The affected SUV features a 10-speed automatic transmission with linear solenoids controlling gear shifts.
According to Toyota, a solenoid failure under specific driving conditions may go undetected by the T-ECU and Engine ECU, potentially making the transmission over-rev in certain gears.
This can damage the transmission, reduce power at high speeds, and, in severe cases, lead to transmission fluid leaks, increasing the risk of a crash or fire.

The commission has advised owners of the affected LC300 models to take their vehicles to the nearest authorized Toyota dealerships for Transmission ECU reprogramming.
Consumers purchasing second-hand models are urged to verify whether the vehicle is part of the recalled batch.
COMESA stated that it continues to collaborate with Toyota and member states to ensure affected consumers are informed and receive necessary redress.

Lexus Recall
Another recall includes Lexus LX500D vehicles, including the LX500D-FSport and LX500D Overtrail models, sold between 13 March 2025 and 16 January 2026.
Like the Toyota Land Cruiser LC300, these Lexus models feature a 10-speed automatic transmission with linear solenoid controls.
Owners of the affected Lexus vehicles have been advised to take them to authorized Lexus dealerships for Transmission ECU reprogramming at no cost.
Further, owners have been urged to act promptly due to the serious safety risks involved.
