Jeffries Says Democrats Must Win Midterms to End Trump ‘Extremism’ After Virginia Supreme Court Ruling

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries declared Friday that Democrats must sweep the 2026 midterm elections to stop President Donald Trump’s extreme agenda after the Virginia Supreme Court struck down a voter-approved redistricting measure.

Jeffries said the court’s 4-3 decision overturning the April referendum “will not stand.” The ruling threw out changes that Virginia voters narrowly backed, 52% to 48%. Jeffries called it a direct attack on more than three million Virginians who went to the polls.

“The decision by the Virginia Supreme Court to overturn the will of more than three million voters will not stand,” Jeffries wrote on X, May 8, 2026.

Ruling Deals Major Blow to Democrats

The amendment would have let the Democratic-controlled Virginia legislature draw new congressional maps. Those maps were expected to flip up to four House seats toward Democrats.

Instead, the court ruled that lawmakers broke the state constitution by rushing the measure through a special session after early voting had started.

The decision keeps the current 6-5 Democratic edge in Virginia’s congressional delegation in place for the midterms.

Republicans hailed the ruling as a win for the rule of law and fair maps. Democrats called it a partisan power play by a court with justices chosen by the General Assembly.

Jeffries Takes on Republicans After the Ruling

Jeffries directly linked the Virginia Supreme Court ruling to the fight against Donald Trump and Republicans.

“No matter what it takes, House Democrats will win in November so we can help rescue this nation from the extremism being unleashed by Donald Trump and Republicans,” he said in a published statement.

Jeffries accused MAGA Republicans of using voter suppression methods and said the ruling disenfranchised more than three million Virginians who voted in the April referendum. He added, “Our fight is not over. We are just getting started.”

The ruling comes at a tough time for Democrats, considering Republicans hold a narrow majority in the House after the 2024 elections that put Trump back in the White House.

Virginia’s current maps give Democrats a slight advantage, but analysts say competitive districts could swing either way in a tough national environment.

Lawyers said the Virginia Supreme Court ruling was a procedural, not political, matter. The majority opinion said the legislature broke rules requiring the amendments to go through certain steps and elections. Three justices disagreed, saying the voters’ decision should be respected.

Virginia Attorney General Jay Jones, a Democrat, criticized the court for putting politics over the clear vote of the people.

Republicans, including state Sen. Ryan McDougle, called the process flawed from the start and said the bipartisan redistricting commission approved in 2020 should remain in control.

House Speaker Mike Johnson said the ruling is a victory for the nation’s democracy.

“The Virginia Supreme Court has affirmed what we believed from the beginning: the hastily drawn, egregious gerrymander was unconstitutional. This ruling is a victory for democracy and ensures Virginians have fair representation in Congress,” Johnson said.

Virginia is a litmus test watched by Democrats and Republicans as the November midterm campaign heats up.

The state’s mix of suburban voters around Washington and rural conservatives is a bellwether for national trends.

Trump has repeatedly been warned that he could face a third impeachment if Democrats win back the House majority in the November midterm elections.

The Virginia Supreme Court ruling comes as a big win for the President. The court decision blocks Democrats from drawing new districts that were expected to help them gain several House seats.

The decision makes it harder for Democrats to flip the House in the midterms.
