A growing number of prominent MAGA figures and Democrats are publicly questioning President Donald Trump’s mental fitness after his recent statements. The White House and most of his allies dismiss the concerns.
A Reuters/Ipsos poll released in February shows 61 percent of Americans, including 64 percent of independents and 30 percent of Republicans, say Trump has become more erratic with age. Legislative efforts to invoke the 25th Amendment have begun but face resistance.
MAGA figures question president’s fitness
President Donald Trump’s statements have long drawn questions from political opponents about his mental health. In recent weeks the criticism has come from inside the MAGA movement as well.
Former Republican congresswoman from Georgia Marjorie Taylor Greene said during an April 15 appearance on CNN International, “I really think that his mental capacity needs to be examined.”
She said she has been shocked at the president’s recent rhetoric, including his warning that a whole civilization will die and Iranians will be living in Hell if his demands are not met.
Candace Owens referred to Trump as a genocidal lunatic in an April 7 post on X and called for the 25th Amendment to remove him from office. “Our Congress and military need to intervene. We are beyond madness,” she said.

The statements have highlighted divisions in the Make America Great Again movement over Trump’s military strikes on foreign soil. Alex Jones, a longtime Trump supporter, said on a March 31 episode of his program that GOP incumbents should cut bait on the president before the 2026 midterm elections. Some former White House officials from Trump’s first term have echoed the concerns.
Trump and allies push back
Trump accused the MAGA media figures of seeking cheap publicity. “They’re not ‘MAGA,’ they’re losers, just trying to latch on to MAGA,” he said in an April 9 social media post.
Most allies on Capitol Hill have stood by the president. Former FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino, who left the administration in January, called the right-leaning critics people pretending to be one of them who grifted off Trump. He said the president’s behavior is strategic rather than a sign of any problem.
Trump’s recent remarks have included threats about Iran such as giving the country 10 days to make a deal or open the Hormuz Strait, with all Hell to reign down if unmet.
During a March Cabinet meeting he spoke for five minutes about his love for $5 Sharpie permanent markers. While updating reporters on the Iran war that month he paused to say he picked the White House curtains in his first term. In an April 15 Fox Business interview he said no other president has ended a war and incorrectly stated that Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina is no longer in the Senate.
Democrats have moved on the issue. Rep. Jamie Raskin of Maryland is advancing a measure to create a panel to assess the president’s fitness under the 25th Amendment and has asked the White House physician for a mental health evaluation.
During an April 17 House Education and Workforce committee hearing, Rep. Mark Takano of California asked Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. if he would insist on such an assessment for the president. Kennedy said he would not.

The NAACP, for the first time in its 117-year history, called for the 25th Amendment to be invoked. White House spokesman Davis Ingle said in a statement that Trump’s sharpness and energy stand in contrast to the previous administration.
Why this matters
The Reuters/Ipsos poll shows fewer voters now believe Trump is mentally sharp or able to deal with challenges than during the 2024 campaign. The share fell from 54 percent in September 2023 to 45 percent in February 2026. Trump turns 80 on June 14.
He has placed a banner with his image on the facade of the U.S. Justice Department headquarters, added his signature to U.S. paper currency starting with the $100 bill, and renamed the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts the Trump-Kennedy Center.
Days after backlash over an AI-generated image of himself as a Christ-like figure he posted a picture of himself being embraced by Jesus on Truth Social.
