Eugene Mutuku, a final-year student at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Yatta Campus in Machakos County, died in a bus accident in Kasarani.
Eugene is reported to have been ejected from a moving NICCO SACCO matatu on June 5 while en route to Kasarani.
Speaking to the media, a witness who was driving behind the bus and helped the student after the incident said Eugene had been thrown out of the vehicle and run over by the same vehicle.
“It was around 6: 30 when I was going to work using the Garden City service lane when I witnessed a passenger alight the NICCO SACCO matatu abruptly and was run over by the vehicle,” the witness recalled the events surrounding Eugene’s accident.
Details of Eugene Mutuku
As a final-year student at the Yatta KMTC campus, Eugene Mutuku was set to graduate in 2026, having enrolled to pursue medical training to become a healthcare professional.
At the time of the accident, the KMTC student was headed to his attachment at a hospital in the Kasarani area as part of the unit curriculum.
After the accident, the eyewitness called Eugene’s brother as paramedics worked to stabilize the patient.
Students who studied and worked with the deceased were also present at the hospital in support of their coursemate.

Events Surrounding the NICCO SACCO Accident
Following the accident on Thika Road, the NICCO bus involved in the accident did not stop.
The eyewitness, in collaboration with bystanders and a good Samaritan, picked Eugene, and one of the good Samaritans offered to take the student to the hospital.
As he drove to find a nearby hospital, the eyewitness came across the same NICCO matatu near the Garden City roundabout.
The eyewitness pleaded with the conductor and the driver to accompany him to the hospital to seek medical attention for Eugene, who had severe leg injuries, but neither of them complied.
Instead of accompanying the eyewitness, the conductor and the driver stated that they were heading to the police station and only took the contact of the eyewitness.
In a state of panic, the eyewitness had to stop at the Shell petrol station to seek help locating the nearest hospital.

Hospitalization of the late Eugene Mutuku
Eugene was taken to Garden City Avenue Hospital for treatment, but unfortunately the hospital had been closed.
Following the closure of the Avenue hospital, the eyewitness called 911 to report the incident and was redirected to Neema Uhai Hospital.
Upon arrival, Neema Uhai quickly provided an ambulance after assessing the deceased, whose condition was critical, and took Eugene to the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).
Paramedics from Neema Uhai Hospital worked on stabilizing the deceased as the eyewitness proceeded to pay KSh 1,850 at the e-Citizen payment at the hospital. Still, the systems at the KNH were slow due to network issues.
Despite the eyewitness requesting that the patient be charged, the hospital maintained that the payment must be made before services are rendered as part of the Taifa Care system.
As they awaited, the eyewitness contacted the deceased’s brother, who traveled from Njiru to KNH.
“When the doctor came, instead of checking on the patient, he started questioning the paramedic on why they had brought a stable patient to KNH. I broke down and due to the situation, they admitted the patient,” the witness stated.
After the handover, the eyewitness returned to Kasarani Police Station to record his statement and submit his dashcam footage.
NICCO SACCO management was contacted and the vehicle involved in the incident ordered to be taken to the police station.
As the eyewitness left the station, the NICCO matatu was at the station, and that is when he received the information on the passing of the student.
