The White House has hit back at Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker after the Democratic governor suggested President Donald Trump is “suffering from dementia” during a television interview.
Pritzker made the remarks while appearing on CNN with anchor Kaitlan Collins on Tuesday, June 30, where he criticized Trump’s recent comments about socialism and accused the president of making statements without completely understanding them.
The governor’s comments prompted an immediate response from the White House, which defended Trump’s health and accused Pritzker of making false claims for political attention.
White House Rebukes Pritzker’s Dementia Allegation
According to the White House, Pritzker’s remarks were an attempt to stay relevant rather than a serious assessment of the president’s health.
A White House spokesperson described Pritzker as “a slob and an incompetent governor who pushes blatantly false narratives like this in a desperate attempt to stay relevant.”
The spokesperson added that instead of making accusations during television interviews, Pritzker should focus on governing Illinois.
The White House also defended Trump’s health record.
“President Trump’s sharpness, unmatched energy, and historic accessibility stand in stark contrast to what we saw during the past four years when the legacy media intentionally covered up Joe Biden’s serious mental and physical decline from the American people,” the spokesperson said.
The administration further stated that Trump and his team have been transparent about the president’s health and maintained that his condition “remains exceptional.”
What Pritzker Said During the CNN Interview
Pritzker made the comments after Collins asked him about Trump’s recent warning that communism posed a greater threat to the United States than events including the two World Wars, the attack on Pearl Harbor and the September 11 terrorist attacks.
“Look, the man is continually suffering from dementia,” Pritzker said during the interview. “I don’t think he really understands what he’s saying.”
The Illinois governor later acknowledged that he is not a physician, regardless of his claims.
“I’m not a doctor. I haven’t diagnosed anything,” he said, while arguing that Trump’s public appearances show what he believes is a decline compared with earlier years.

Pritzker also accused Trump of threatening political opponents and said the president often speaks without fully thinking through his remarks.
“He has these concepts in his head, and he blurts them out without really thinking,” Pritzker said.

Trump’s comments that sparked the exchange came after several Democratic candidates aligned with the party’s progressive wing won primary elections, including candidates backed by New York City mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani.
The president argued that socialism has become an increasingly serious political threat in the United States.
“It’s too easy to get elected, giving everything away,” Trump said earlier this week. “It’s easy for them to get followers because they make promises they know they can’t keep.”
White House Defends Trump’s Health Record
Questions about Trump’s health have surfaced periodically during his second term.
The president, who turned 80 in June, underwent his third physical examination in 13 months in May.
The White House has repeatedly said those examinations show Trump remains in good health.
Recent Medical Reports and Questions Over Transparency
Last month, Democratic Rep. Jamie Raskin of Maryland wrote to Trump’s physician, Capt. Sean Barbabella, requesting additional information about the president’s medical condition.
Raskin questioned why more than 20 medical specialists participated in Trump’s recent examination and called for greater public transparency regarding the president’s health.
Earlier this year, visible bruising on Trump’s hand and swelling around his ankles also prompted questions from reporters.
Barbabella said the bruising resulted from frequent handshakes combined with Trump’s daily aspirin use for cardiac prevention.

He also said the swelling was caused by chronic venous insufficiency, a common condition affecting blood circulation in the legs.
The White House has consistently rejected suggestions that Trump is experiencing cognitive or physical decline, arguing that the president continues to maintain a demanding public schedule.
The Illinois governor has emerged as one of Trump’s most outspoken Democratic critics, frequently challenging the administration’s policies on immigration, education and federal authority.
The White House, meanwhile, has been portraying Democratic criticism of Trump’s health as politically motivated.
The officials argue that similar concerns about former President Joe Biden received less scrutiny during his time in office.
