Former Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene on Saturday wondered why President Donald Trump isn’t pushing harder for answers about the July 13, 2024, assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania.
Greene raised the concern in response to a long X thread from Trisha Hope, a former Trump supporter and national delegate, who had also questioned how the assassination attempt happened and what has happened since.
She noted that Trump spoke about the story only once at the Republican National Convention and said he would not speak of it again because it was too painful.
MTG wants Trump to lead the charge.
“President Trump, of all people, should be leading the charge. Why isn’t he? That’s the question,” Greene wrote on X, April 18, 2026.
The Butler rally shooting left one man dead and two others wounded after Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, climbed onto a rooftop about 400 feet from the stage and fired eight rounds from an AR-15-style rifle. One bullet grazed Trump’s right ear.
Corey Comperatore, a 50-year-old firefighter and father of two, was hit in the head while shielding his family. He died at the scene.
After multiple investigations, a bipartisan House task force and Senate reports described a “cascade of preventable errors” by the Secret Service.
It was revealed that agents failed to secure the rooftop, even after local police spotted Crooks acting suspiciously with a rangefinder.

It was also revealed that communication lapses and staffing shortages played roles. The Secret Service suspended six people involved, but later allowed most of them to return to work.
The FBI wrapped up its probe in November 2025 after Director Kash Patel and Deputy Director Dan Bongino said Crooks acted alone.
They reviewed thousands of interviews, digital devices, financial records, and foreign tips. They found no clear motive and no evidence that he worked with anyone else. Trump was briefed as a victim and was satisfied with the findings, according to the FBI.
Inquiries persist for others.
Hope’s thread brought attention to the fact that Sean Curran, the agent in the white shirt in the famous photo, was made head of the Secret Service just a few months after Trump took office in January 2025.
She wanted to know why no one got in trouble. She also said Comperatore’s widow, Helen, still seeks full answers and has felt ignored.
Helen Comperatore has spoken out several times, including during a July 2025 interview, in which she said she remains angry.
“We were all sitting ducks that day,” she told Fox News. “Our blood is all over their hands.”
Her daughter, Kelly Comperatore Meeder, said the family is furious that suspensions lasted only days or weeks and that no one was fired outright. They want to know exactly why the roof was left unguarded.
Congressional reports pointed to deeper problems inside the Secret Service, including poor planning and failure to share threat information.

A Senate Judiciary report released in 2025 said the agency had received classified intelligence about risks to Trump ten days before the rally, but did not properly pass it down.
Trump has mentioned the attempt in speeches, frequently saying he “took a bullet for democracy.” But he has not made a major public push for new investigations since taking office. His administration has focused on other priorities.
The shooting happened less than four months before the 2024 election. Trump recovered quickly and used the moment to project strength.
FBI’s take.
The image of him, bloodied but defiant, became a campaign symbol. At the convention, he wore a bandage over his ear and received a hero’s welcome.
Nearly two years later, the case is officially closed by the FBI as a lone gunman attack with no conspiracy found.
Still, the families of the victims and some lawmakers say loose ends remain. They point to the speed of the official narrative, the promotion of agents involved, and the lack of harsh accountability.
Greene ended her post by saying the Comperatore family deserves the truth about Crooks and what happened that day. She suggested Trump should lead that effort.
So far, the White House has not commented on Greene’s remarks.
