The National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC-K) has officially announced the appointment of Elynah Shiveka to its board, strengthening the organisation’s leadership ahead of a crucial Olympic cycle.

This appointment comes at a time when NOC-K is working to position Kenya for success on the global stage, with preparations already underway for upcoming continental and international competitions, including the Paris 2028 Olympics.

Elynah Shiveka Distinguished Career in Sports

Elynah Shiveka’s involvement in Kenyan sports spans over three decades, beginning with her career as an elite hockey player representing the country on the international stage.

She first rose to prominence in the late 1980s, when she broke into the Kenya women’s national hockey team, known as the Kenya Lionesses, as a winger and striker.

Shiveka was part of the national team throughout the 1990s, a period when Kenyan hockey was striving to re-establish itself as a competitive force in Africa.

She competed in multiple Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and regional championships, including the All-Africa Games and East and Central African Championships, representing Kenya against top teams such as South Africa, Egypt, and Nigeria.

A Lifelong Commitment to Sport

Following her playing career, Elynah Shiveka transitioned seamlessly into sports administration and broadcasting, becoming one of the most respected figures in Kenyan sports media.

Her deep understanding of the game, combined with her communication skills, made her a natural fit for the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC), where she would go on to serve for over three decades, eventually rising to the position of Chief Producer.

At KBC, Shiveka became a leading voice in sports journalism, producing and overseeing coverage of major local and international events.

Her editorial vision emphasized the role of sport as a tool for national unity, often highlighting stories that celebrated resilience, diversity, and patriotism.

Her work helped elevate the visibility of lesser-covered sports, including hockey, volleyball, and athletics, giving a platform to athletes across the country.

Leadership in Sports Governance

Shiveka’s influence extended beyond the newsroom. She took on leadership roles within sports federations, most notably as Deputy President (Female) of the Kenya Hockey Union (KHU).

In this role, Elynah Shiveka has been instrumental in shaping policy, advocating for gender equity, and promoting youth development programs.

Her tenure has coincided with renewed efforts by the government to professionalize hockey in Kenya, including strategic marketing initiatives and grassroots outreach.

Her governance credentials were further recognized when she was appointed to the Sports Dispute Tribunal, a judicial body tasked with resolving conflicts within Kenya’s sports ecosystem. Her presence on the tribunal has been praised for bringing balance, experience, and a strong ethical compass to sports arbitration.

International Recognition

Shiveka’s contributions have also earned her recognition on the global stage.

She currently serves on the FIH Health and Safety Committee, under the International Hockey Federation, where she helps shape international policy on athlete welfare and safety standards.

Her appointment to this committee reflects her standing as a respected voice in global sports governance.

NOCK Recent Activities

NOC-K, through the Olympafrica Foundation, is finalising plans to work with Migori County to upgrade local infrastructure.

The proposal includes establishing a sports excellence facility to train local coaches and nurture young athletes.

The goal is to create facilities in three counties (including Migori) for youth development and preparation for events like the 2026 Youth Olympics in Senegal.

NOC-K is exploring collaboration with Kenya’s State Department for Correctional Services to integrate sports into the rehabilitation and reform agenda.

Planned initiatives under discussion include a sports academy at the Nairobi West prison, technical training for coaches, and incorporating Olympic values into correctional facility programs.

On September 19, 2025, during meetings in Tokyo, NOC-K initiated discussions with the Japan Olympic Committee to establish a partnership in athlete and coach development, sports science, and elite academy models.

The collaboration aims to draw on Japan’s structures (training, recovery, nutrition, biomechanics) and Kenya’s altitude training environment.

Joint programs, exchange opportunities, and possible Memorandums of Understanding are expected to follow.
