Kenya’s largest telco, Safaricom, is set to introduce a new data bundle system based on time-based bundles, which will complement its traditional MB/GB-based billing model.
The system, dubbed the B Live System, is not meant to replace MB/GB bundles but rather to provide an additional option to cater to customers with different needs.
Safaricom explained that since customers have varying usage patterns, the new model gives everyone the freedom to choose what works best for them and to select plans that fit their lifestyle.
Under this model, instead of paying for the amount of data consumed, customers will be charged based on the duration of their online sessions.
The change is expected to benefit heavy streamers and downloaders, who can consume unlimited data within their chosen time frame.
However, light and casual users—those who mainly browse, check WhatsApp, or send emails—may lose out, since charges will still apply even when apps are idle or usage is minimal.
Safaricom is Set to Complement Data Bundles with Time Bundles
Under this model, whether you stream 2GB in an hour or just read emails, the cost remains the same, because the clock will keep running.
The system is similar to that of the dial-up era, where users were billed according to connection time rather than data consumed.

Safaricom is reportedly introducing the plan to help manage network congestion while offering more value to heavy users who download large files quickly.
Key Advantages of Time-Based Billing
- Simplified Billing for Users
Easier to understand than MB/GB tracking, especially for less tech-savvy customers. Users only need to monitor the duration of their internet sessions. - Cost Efficiency for Heavy Users
Those who download or stream large files quickly can save money since charges are based on time, not data volume. - Reduced Network Congestion
Encouraging shorter, more efficient sessions helps optimize Safaricom’s network, improving service quality during peak hours. - Encourages Efficient Usage
Customers may become more mindful of idle connections, ensuring they get the most out of their purchased time. - Alignment with Global Trends
Time-based billing is a system used in some markets, like satellite internet, where the main measure is the connection time.
