Drama unfolded on Thursday, May 15 in Lavington when gunshots were fired in the air during the official party launch of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
According to preliminary reports, gunshots were fired in the air after goons staged an attack at DCP Headquarters in Lavington, Nairobi, shortly after former DP Gachagua’s speech.
In videos seen by The Kenya Times, security officials who were on high alert quickly intervened and shot into the air to disperse the crowd, which had gathered to witness the former DP’s launch of the new party.
A person believed to be a police officer holding a gun can also be seen shooting in the air as the crowd rushed towards the gate.
“Remove the vehicle!” shouted one of the men believed to be a Police officer as vehicles momentarily stalled amid the commotion.
Earlier, President William Ruto’s senior economic adviser, Moses Kuria, welcomed the launch of the DCP just moments after it wads unveiled on Wednesday in Lavington.

DCP’s slogan is Kazi na Haki (Work and Justice), and the colours are neon green, brown, and white, designed to symbolise renewal and peace.
Branded with a listening ear as its logo, DCP is positioning itself as a people-centered party that pledges to amplify the voices of ordinary Kenyans.
According to Gachagua, the party slogan, “Skiza Wakenya”, translating to “Listen to Kenyans”, shows the party’s mission to put the concerns of Kenyans at the heart of governance.
“We believe as a party that every Kenyan must be listened to by their leaders. This listening must not just be listening for the sake of it. It must be deliberate, planned, and must have a purpose, and must be sustainable. At no one given point in our leadership shall Kenyans be left behind or remain unheard,” said Gachagua.
While explaining that the party was for every Kenyan irrespective of age, faith, colour or tribe he added, “You know that I have always been a people’s person, especially for those in the deepest corner of our villages.”
Former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala has been named as the interim deputy party leader while former Agriculture CS Mithika Linturi has been unveiled as National Organising Secretary.
