The Ministry of Health on November 1 issued a statement following the death of Lucy Wambui who died after complications from a plastic surgery.
In a statement, the Ministry said that the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Council has initiated an investigation into the matter.
“The Ministry of Health has received with deep concern the report of Lucy Wambui’s tragic passing following complications from a surgical procedure at a Nairobi hospital.
An investigation has been initiated by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council to thoroughly examine the circumstances leading to this incident,” part of the statement read.

Further, the Ministry said that a team has been dispatched to look into the matter and assess whether there was medical negligence on the end of the facility that conducted the surgery.
“A team has been dispatched to the facility to conduct a fact-finding mission aimed at assessing whether the necessary professional standards were met in Lucy’s care,” the statement read.
Additionally, the Ministry warned that if the facility is found culpable of wrongdoing, it will be punished according to the law.

“Any evidence of malpractice or deviation from established norms will be addressed with appropriate action, in line with applicable laws,” the Health Ministry stated.
The Health Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring strict regulation of healthcare services.

“Robust frameworks are in place to regulate healthcare services, uphold ethical standards, protect consumers, and foster public trust in health services,” read the statement.
At the same time, the Health Ministry called on the public to verify the credentials of healthcare providers and facilities.
Omnicare Facility denies any wrongdoing from the surgery
Earlier, Omnicare Medical Facility issued a statement confirming that Lucy Wambui underwent surgery at their facility and distanced itself from any wrongdoing.
“Wambui has died under circumstances that are currently undetermined. Our team is collaborating closely with relevant authorities to ensure a full, objective review. We would like to confirm that the deceased successfully had her procedure done at our facility and was fully discharged,” read the statement.

The facility has since been closed by Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Council but has filed a court application challenging a closure notice issued by the Council.
Lawyer Dunstan Omari, who represents the owners, argues that the facility is equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment and qualified surgeons.
