JamboJet Announces Flight Disruptions After Plane Accident at JKIA

JamboJet has issued an update on an incident involving one of its Q400 aircraft which was damaged at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Monday, December 2, night.

The Q400 aircraft rolled and rammed into flagpoles at the JKIA VIP state pavilion.

Preliminary reports suggested the incident occurred overnight with officials suspecting that the aircraft was parked without its chokes in place or brakes engaged.

JamboJet in a statement on Tuesday confirmed the incident, noting that it happened while the aircraft was undergoing maintenance.

“Jambojet wishes to confirm an incident involving one of our aircraft during routine overnight maintenance activities. While parked, the aircraft rolled off the ramp and came into contact with a pole, resulting in some damage to its nose,” the notice reads.

However, JamboJet reported that no injuries occurred to any of its staff during this incident, adding that its team is working diligently with the authorities to investigate the matter and ensure all necessary measures are taken to prevent a recurrence.

In turn, the carrier said that it anticipates some flight disruptions due to this incident, and that affected guests will be communicated to directly.

Jambo Jet further apologized for the inconvenience caused and reiterated its commitment to the safety of its staff and customers.”

“Safety remains our top priority, and we remain committed to maintaining the highest standards in all our operations. The aircraft has since been removed from operations, until it is cleared.”

“We anticipate some flight disruptions due to this incident, and affected guests will be communicated to directly.”

Cases of aircraft crashes have been reported in the country in the recent past.

Plane crashes in September

A light aircraft with 11 people on board crashed during takeoff at a Migori airstrip on Monday, September 16, 2024.

The crash occurred at around midday when the aircraft, registration number 5Y-ZBW, operated by Boskovic Air Charters, veered off the runway while attempting to take off from Lichota Airstrip in Migori County.

However, the flight company confirmed that no injuries were reported

“The aircraft was carrying 10 passengers and one crew member at the time of the incident. We are relieved to confirm that there were no fatalities or injuries,” the company said in a statement.

Boskovic Air Charters said that they have engaged the relevant authorities to assist in the investigation.

“We are closely monitoring the incident. Further updates will be provided if more information becomes available,” the company added.

Three days later, two people survived after a light aircraft they were flying in crash-landed inside the Nairobi National Park.

The Cessna 152, registration number 5Y-PSJ operated by West Rift Aviation School, crashed at around 7am on Thursday, September 19.

“This morning September 19, 2024, at approximately 7 am a Cessna 152, registration number 5Y-PSJ, encountered an incident while flying over the National Park. There were two crew on board the aircraft,” a statement from the operator read.

The pilot, an aviation student, sustained injuries during the accident.
