Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has advised students applying for placement by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Placement Service (KUCCPS) to use the USSD code *222# to confirm their payments or trigger validation of payments.
In a statement, Machogu assured that his Ministry had taken note of the challenges facing students in their attempts to place applications within the given timelines.
According to his statement, officials in the Ministry were working in collaboration with other stakeholders to address all challenges facing students and complaints about slow progress.
As part of the measures taken to fast track the process, the Education Ministry has also assembled a team comprising representatives from relevant agencies to ensure prompt reflection of transactions made by the applicants.
“In the meantime, applicants whose payments are experiencing unusual delays are encouraged to use the USSD code *222# to confirm their payments and/or trigger validation,” the statement read in part.
“A detailed procedure for the process is to be disseminated by KUCCPS immediately.”
Machogu announces new deadline
Meanwhile, according to CS Machogu, the deadline for KUCCPS applications has been pushed to March 4, 2024, to allow all interested students to apply.
As per the statement, only 121,391 (60.8%) of students who scored grades C+ and above had applied by Sunday, February 25.
The number, Machogu stated, was lower than the targeted 86% hence the decision to extend the deadline.

Based on past application behaviors, the Ministry of Education had predicted that over 171,738 students with grades C+ and above would apply for slots in various universities with the rest expected to apply for slots in non-participating universities, Module II Programmes or institutions of higher learning in other countries.
“Over this period, the Ministry of Education has been monitoring the process to ensure that all the targeted applicants have a fair, efficient and effective opportunity to apply for their desired courses,” the Education CS stated.

The Education CS also urged students who scored mean grades of between C and E to take advantage of the ongoing applications to select their desired diploma, craft certificate or artisan programmes offered in TVET institutions, coming one week after KUCCPS made a similar appeal.
“This category of students has the advantage of walking into their preferred Ministry of Education TVET institutions to be assisted with the application process,” the statement added.
