President William Ruto has nominated Douglas Kanja Kirocho for appointment as the Inspector-General of the National Police Service. Kanja took over the role in acting capacity after the resignation of Japhet Koome.
According to Ruto, Kanja is the right man for the job because of his stellar career that he has had for over four decades in the force. Additionally, Ruto has hailed Kanja for having risen through the ranks to the top command of the Service.
Among his many duties in law enforcement, Kanja served as an Armourer at the Police Headquarters and Deputy Chief Armourer at the Kenya Police Service Headquarters.
“Не previously served as Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service, Commandant of the General Service Unit for a period of five years,
“Deputy Commandant of the General Service, Unit for three years, County Police Commander in charge of Kilifi County, Deputy Commandant of Kenya Airports Police Unit,” the statement read in part.
At the same time, the head of state has argued that Kanja has the relevant training for the job, explaining that he has trained both in Kenya and abroad.

Ruto Appoints New Deputy IGs
On the other hand, Ruto has appointed Eliud Kipkoech Lagat as the Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service.
Further, he has appointed Gilbert Masengeli as the Deputy Inspector General of the Administration Police Service.
“Pursuant to Article 245(3) of the Constitution, as read with Section 13 of the National Police Service Act, the Head of State has effected the appointments of two Deputy Inspector- Generals.”
Gilbert Masengeli will take over as the acting inspector General of the National Police Service as Kanja undergoes vetting.
“Pending the consideration of the nomination of Mr. Douglas Kanja as Inspector-General of the National Police Service by both houses of Parliament,
“The Head of State has, in accordance with Section 16 of the National Police Service Act, 2011, designated Mr. Gilbert Masengeli, the newly appointed Deputy Inspector General, Administration Police Service, as the acting Inspector-General of the National Police Service.”

Shortlisted Applicants for the Deputy IG Positions
Twelve applicants were shortlisted for the position of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of police following an advertisement for the positions on March 21, 2023
The National Police Service Commission (NPSC) reported that they received a total of thirty applications out of which the twelve were shortlisted.
The candidates shortlisted included former police spokesperson Bruno Shioso, former acting Deputy IG Abdalla Komesha, David Kipkosgei, Vincent Makokha, David Rono, Jacinta Muthoni and Maurice Kiplagat.
Additionally, Tom Mboya, Rosemary Sipatan, Douglas Kanja, Gideon Munga and Judy Jebet were shortlisted for the jobs.
