Governors have elected Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi as the new chairperson of the Council of Governors (COG), bringing an end to the reign of Governor Ann Waiguru.
The county bosses converged at Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi on Monday, October 7, for the elections.

He contested against Nyeri counterpart Mutahi Kahiga, Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki, Kajiado Governor Joseph Ole Lenku, and Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja.
Moreover, Abdullahi will be deputized by Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga.

The outgoing chair, Ann Waiguru is expected to hold her last State of the Nation address at the same venue and hand over the mantle.
Ahmed Abdullahi and Waiguru Tenure
In October 2023, Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru was unanimously re-elected as the COG Chairperson alongside Governor Ahmed Abdullahi of Wajir as the Vice Chairperson.

Waiguru was the first woman to be elected as the Council Chairperson, having succeeded Martin Wambora, former Governor Embu County.
Moreover, she had previously served as the Council’s first female vice chairperson from December 2017 to January 2019.
In addition, the Council elections saw Nyeri’s Mutahi Kahiga take over leadership of the CoG Human Resource Committee from Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja.

Previous COG Leadership
The Council of County Governors (COG) is a non-partisan organization established under Section 19 of the Intergovernmental Relations Act (IGRA 2012).
It comprises of the Governors of the forty-seven Counties. main functions are the promotion of visionary leadership, sharing of best practices and offering a collective voice on policy issues, among other matters.
Previous COG chairpersons include Bomet’s Isaac Ruto who served between 2013 and 2015, Meu’s Peter Munya who served between 2015 and 2017, Turkana’s Josphat Nanok who served between 2017 and 2019.
Also, Kakamega’s Wycliffe Oparanya served between 2019 and 2021, Embu’s Martin Wambora led the council between 2021 and 2022, and the outgoing Ann Waiguru, whose reign has lasted between 2022 and 2024.
