United States Senator Amy Klobuchar has officially entered the race for Minnesota Governor.
Launching her bid through a video message released on Thursday, January 29, the Senator positioned herself as a unifying figure while sharply criticizing President Donald Trump’s administration.
Her entry gives Democrats a nationally known contender with a strong electoral track record as the party seeks to retain control of the Governor’s office following incumbent Tim Walz’s decision not to seek a third term.
Walz, who was the Democratic vice-presidential nominee in 2024, stepped aside earlier this month after coming under pressure over alleged mismanagement of public funds allocated to childcare programs.
In the campaign video, Klobuchar struck a defiant but conciliatory tone.
“Minnesota, we’ve been through a lot,” Klobuchar said in the video. “These times call for leaders who can stand up and not be rubber stamps of this administration — but who are also willing to find common ground and fix things in our state.”
Klobuchar pointed to a series of traumatic events the state has experienced over the past year, including heightened immigration enforcement, the killing of two Minnesotans during protests, the assassination of a state legislative leader, and a school shooting that left several children dead.

While outlining these crises, she avoided direct reference to the ongoing federal investigations into Minnesota’s childcare programs, which Trump has repeatedly highlighted in his attacks on state leadership.
“I believe we must stand up for what’s right and fix what’s wrong,” Klobuchar said.

If elected, Klobuchar would become the fourth sitting U.S. Senator to pursue a governorship in their home state in the 2026 election cycle. She has emerged as one of Trump’s most vocal critics in Congress, particularly over the administration’s immigration policies, which have triggered large-scale protests across the country.
The Minnesota Governor’s race is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched contests among the 36 governorships on the ballot in November.
Several Republicans have already declared their candidacies, including MyPillow founder Mike Lindell, Minnesota House Speaker Lisa Demuth, former state Senator and 2022 GOP nominee Scott Jensen, and state Representative Kristin Robbins.
The campaign is expected to test Trump’s hardline law-and-order agenda and mass deportation strategy against Democratic claims that federal enforcement actions have crossed constitutional boundaries. Federal agents have been accused of detaining U.S. citizens, entering homes without warrants, and engaging in violent confrontations with protesters.
Tensions escalated further earlier this month after Minnesota resident and U.S. citizen Renee Good was fatally shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer. Days later, ICU nurse Alex Pretti was also killed during a separate encounter with federal officers.
Klobuchar in Senate
Now in her fourth term in the Senate, Klobuchar is a former local prosecutor and past presidential contender who has built a reputation as a pragmatic moderate capable of winning broad statewide support.
In her 2024 reelection campaign, she secured victory by nearly 16 percentage points, outperforming Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris by more than 135,000 votes in Minnesota. Harris narrowly defeated Trump in the state by fewer than five percentage points.
Klobuchar gained national prominence during Trump’s first term through her pointed questioning of judicial nominees, including Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

During his confirmation hearings, she challenged him over alcohol use and memory lapses, prompting a tense exchange that later ended with an apology from Kavanaugh after his confirmation by a single vote.
Following the January 6, 2021 Capitol attack, Klobuchar became a leading voice in congressional investigations into the breach. As chair of the Senate Rules Committee, she pressed security officials and administration leaders on intelligence failures and response gaps.
“It’s our duty to have immediate responses to what happened,” she said after contributing to a report focused on strengthening security protocols at the Capitol.
Klobuchar previously sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020, launching her campaign during a Minnesota snowstorm to emphasize resilience and Midwestern grit.
Though her campaign faced scrutiny over staff management allegations, she distinguished herself as a disciplined debater and pragmatic lawmaker, finishing ahead of Joe Biden in early contests before exiting the race following the South Carolina primary.
After Biden’s election, Klobuchar was widely viewed as a potential Cabinet nominee, though the evenly split Senate ultimately limited staffing options for the new administration.
The Senator has also in the past spoken openly about her health, announcing in 2021 that she had undergone treatment for breast cancer and confirming in 2024 that she was cancer-free while continuing preventive radiation therapy.
She now joins Colorado Democrat Michael Bennet, Tennessee Republican Marsha Blackburn, and Alabama Republican Tommy Tuberville as sitting Senators pursuing governorships. Bennet, Blackburn, and Klobuchar are not up for reelection in 2026, allowing them to retain their Senate seats if unsuccessful.
Tuberville, however, is serving the final year of his term and is set to leave the Senate in January 2027 regardless of the election outcome.
