Traffic Snarl-Up on Major Highway as Protestors Block Road

Motorists traveling along the Narok-Suswa highway were caught up in a traffic gridlock as traffic flow was paralyzed at Duka Moja area, near Suswa Town.

This is after herders blocked the road in protest of the death of their livestock that was allegedly run over by a vehicle.

The residents alleged that at least 30 sheep were run over by a government vehicle.

The incident caused traffic congestion along the busy highway leaving motorists stranded.

In videos seen by The Kenya Times, protesters had barricaded the road and lit tyres in the middle of the road, creating an additional barrier for traffic. Fire and huge smoke could be seen billowing from the scene.

The standstill prompted some travelers to abandon their vehicles altogether, choosing to proceed on foot as the congestion intensified, affecting both lanes of the highway.

Some passengers can be seen standing by the side of the road, shielding themselves from the sun while others watched anxiously as the situation unfolded.

The sense of frustration and uncertainty was palpable as the traffic jam showed no signs of abating.

Earlier, residents were seen throwing stones onto the road, further escalating tensions.

In the background, voices could be heard pleading, “Stop throwing stones on this side!” as the situation threatened to spiral out of control.

People traveling from Kisii County to Kenya’s capital, Nairobi or vice versa via the Suswa-Narok road, have been advised to prepare for potential delays.

Calls have been made for the government to intervene and address the concerns raised by the herders, who are demanding action and compensation for their loss.

Transport Paralyzed Earlier

This latest disruption follows an earlier incident in August of the previous year, when tens of tourists and hundreds of motorists were caught up in a massive traffic jam along the Nakuru-Narok Highway.

The motorists found themselves trapped in the traffic after residents of Olokurto Ward staged demonstrations, protesting the poor state of roads in the area.

Witnesses at the time reported that the residents’ protests led to the blockage of a section of the busy highway, causing significant delays for travelers.
