Veteran Journalist and former Citizen TV panelist Mutegi Njau is dead. Njau passed on while receiving treatment at a hospital in Nairobi on June 27 evening.
Njau’s family announced his death in a statement mourning the veteran journalist as a family man and a cherished figure in the community.
“It is with profound sadness that we inform you of the passing of our dad. He left us peacefully on the evening of June 27, 2024, at 7 PM. Dad was a remarkable man whose generosity, sense of humor, and dedication to his career left a lasting impact on everyone he met. He was not only the cornerstone of our family but also a cherished figure in our community,” read part of the statement.

Njau’s family made an appeal to friends and Kenyans to remember them in their thoughts and prayers and thanking everyone for the support extended to the family.

Further, the family revealed that it is currently in the process of arranging for Njau’s funeral and that it will share more details within the next day or two.
“Your presence would be greatly appreciated as we gather to honor his memory. During this difficult time, please keep our family in your thoughts and prayers. We are deeply grateful for your continued support and for the love and friendship you extended to Dad throughout his life.”
Mutegi Njau passes on after illness
Former colleague and journalist David Makali on Friday also announced the passing on of Njau, remembering him as a former colleague whose legacy includes mentoring others.
“Devastated by the passing on of Snr colleague and Cheche/Powerbreakfast at Citizen TV co-host and panelist Mutegi Njau. May your toil on this earth be rewarded and your memory last forever among those you mentored and gifted, or who savored your goodness,” read part of the message.
Mutegi has also been mourned by Communication Strategist and Head of the Deputy Presidential Communication Service (DPCS) Njeri Rugene.

Rugene in a tribute noted that Mutegi Njau made an indelible mark in Kenya’s Journalism, mourning him as a legend who trained many seasoned journalists.
Family Makes appeal
His death comes days after his son Ronald Njau made an appeal to Kenyans for financial support, revealing that the veteran journalist had suffered a stroke.
Ronald in a statement on June 10 said that his dad had suffered a stroke two weeks earlier which prompted his admission to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
“For those who may not be aware, my father, Mutegi Njau, experienced a stroke two weeks ago and has since been in intensive care. During this difficult period, our family profoundly appreciates your prayers for his rapid recovery and support for us,” read part of the statement.
Njau’s son further made an appeal to Kenyans for financial support noting that the family was facing financial challenges to cater for their kin’s medical expenses.
“We are also facing challenges managing the hospital expenses and would be grateful for any financial assistance you can offer,” the statement added.
Mutegi Njau is a former senior editor with the Royal Media Services (RMS), where he worked as a leading investigative journalist.
The deceased also doubled up as the in-house training editor and was in charge of journalistic ethics and libel and defamation issues for the company.
Before joining RMS, Mutegi was at Nation Media Group (NMG) until 2005 after 24 years.
