The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has released an eight-step guide to help Kenyans who earn income solely from employment file their annual tax returns.
Every registered taxpayer with a Personal Identification Number (PIN) issued by KRA is required to file tax returns annually.
In a guide shared on Tuesday, April 14, KRA stated that salaried Kenyans should file their annual income tax returns using the iTax portal.
“Here are a few steps you need to follow, and just like that, you will be done with filing your returns,” KRA said.
KRA Lists 8-Step Procedure of Filing Employment Income Only Returns
In the first step, taxpayers are required to log in to www.itax.kra.go.ke using their KRA PIN or National ID, followed by their iTax password.
Once logged in, navigate to the “Returns” tab and select “ITR for Employment Income Only.”
After selecting the appropriate return type, the system automatically generates the applicable return period on the e-Returns page.
Dates will be auto-populated, and the taxpayer will be required to confirm that the period is correct and then click ‘Next’.

In the fourth step, filers are required to confirm their gross employment income in Section F and ensure the figures match those reflected in their P9 form before proceeding.
If you had more than one employer in the year of filing returns, declare income from all employers in a single return.
The fifth step involves confirming the Pay As You Earn (PAYE) tax already deducted from the employee’s salary. Taxpayers are asked to verify that the amount captured on the form matches the amount deducted during the year.
Next, employees should confirm all deductions reflected in the system in section T. These include statutory deductions such as pension contributions, Affordable Housing Levy (AHL), Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF), and personal relief.
When you file your 2025 annual return, KRA validates the income and expenses you declare against available information. This helps improve accuracy, reduce fraudulent claims, and promote fair taxation.

Once all income and deductions have been verified, the taxpayer proceeds to the seventh step, which involves reviewing the information and submitting the return.
Users must confirm all details and click the Submit button to complete the filing process.
Finally, after submission, the taxpayer will receive an acknowledgment receipt confirming that their return has been successfully filed.
KRA advises taxpayers to download the acknowledgment receipt or check their registered email for confirmation of filing.
Tips on Filing Returns
Before you file, confirm that you have declared all income earned during 2025 (from employment and other sources).
Where applicable, ensure expenses claimed are supported by valid documentation, including compliant invoicing records.
Verify that your withholding tax credits are correctly reflected before submission.
If you make an error after filing, submit an amended return promptly.
