The Kenya Revenue Authority has announced a job vacancy for the position of Commissioner General, who will serve as Chief Executive Officer.
According to a notice shared on April 14, the CEO will oversee the day-to-day operations, revenue collection, and lead the Authority’s strategic transformation agenda as the Accounting officer and member of the Kenya Revenue Authority Board.
In addition, the CEO will ensure that KRA operates in line with its vision of an agile tax and customs agency that facilitates voluntary compliance for all.
“KRA seeks to recruit the Commissioner General who, as Chief Executive Officer, will lead the institution through its transformative journey,” part of the job profile description read.
Qualifications for the KRA CEO position:
- Be a Kenyan Citizen.
- First Degree from a reputable, accredited University.
- Master’s Degree in Finance, Business, Economics, Law, or a relevant field.
- At least fifteen (15) years of working experience, of which ten (10) must be at a senior leadership level in large public or private entities.
- Demonstrate compliance with the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010, and The Leadership and Integrity Act.
- Knowledge of Fiscal and Tax Policy and Administration shall confer an added advantage.
In the notice, KRA urged holders of academic qualifications from foreign Institutions to attach a letter from the Commission for University Education (CUE) recognizing the academic qualification certificate as a qualification recognized in Kenya.
Degrees from foreign institutions submitted with the application without a letter from CUE will not be considered.
Additionally, applicants with non-academic qualifications who wish to have them recognized as equivalent to a degree should present a Certificate of Qualifications Equivalence (CoQE) issued by the Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA).
Application Requirements
All applicants will be required to submit an application letter and a curriculum vitae as part of the application process.
Names, telephone numbers, and email addresses of three (3) referees will also be required for all interested candidates.
Further, interested candidates will be required to submit certified copies of their certificates and National Identity Card.
A current and valid Tax Compliance Certificate from the Kenya Revenue Authority and a valid clearance certificate from the Higher Education Loans Board are also requirements for the application for the position.
In addition, a current and valid acknowledged application to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission and a valid clearance certificate from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations will be checked during the application process.
All applicants will also be required to have a current clearance from a recognized Credit Reference Bureau.
Applicants who, at the time of application, are members of a professional body should be in good standing.
Shortlisted candidates will be required by the Authority to present originals of all the required documents during the interviews.
In addition, the successful candidates will be required to undergo integrity and security background vetting in accordance with KRA and Government procedures.
However, the Authority explained that canvassing in any manner will result in automatic disqualification.
KRA explained that all potential applicants are deemed to have consented to the public disclosure of their names and other relevant details in accordance with legal requirements for public participation.
All candidates have been advised by the Authority to complete their information on the website and attach it to the application.

According to the Authority, the interested applicants should be able to communicate and implement initiatives with broad strategic impact.
Applicants should also be able to effect positive cultural change within the organization and serve as a catalyst for transformation.
Demonstrating the ability to liaise with top-level officials in the government, public, and private sectors will also be a key competence for applicants.
In addition, the applicant must be able to withstand pressure and possess high integrity and influence.
Applicants are also required to possess strong interpersonal, team-building, and communication skills.
Responsibilities of the Kenya Revenue Authority CEO
- Efficient and prudent Management of funds and property of the Authority.
- Provide leadership in identifying Key Result Areas and rally staff the deliver the Authority’s goal.
- Promote revenue collection activities in line with the Government of Kenya’s targets.
- Foster an environment conducive to compliance with Tax and Customs legislation.
- Promote tax administration practices that facilitate trade and business growth.
- Building and sustaining sound working relationships with Government agencies, taxpayers, rs, and other stakeholders.
- Serving as the Authority’s ambassador on Tax and Customs matters at both regional and international levels.

Exit of Former KRA Commissioner General
The vacancy in the Commissioner General position at the Kenya Revenue Authority follows the exit of Commissioner General Humphrey Wattanga on April 8 after serving a three-year term.
The announcement of the non-renewal of Humphrey Wattanga was made by the Kenya Revenue Authority Board, leading to Wattanga proceeding to a terminal leave with immediate effect.
“The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) Board informs the public that it will not be renewing Mr. Humphrey Wattanga’s Contract of Service as Commissioner General. Consequently, and in accordance with his Contract of Service, he is proceeding on terminal leave effective immediately,” a press release by the KRA read.
The Board appointed Dr. Lilian Nyawanda, who was serving as Commissioner of Customs and Border Control, as Acting Commissioner General.
