Safaricom PLC has announced that its mobile money platform, M-PESA, has reached 40 million customers in Kenya as the service marks 19 years since its launch.
In an announcement on March 6, Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa said the company would continue expanding digital financial tools aimed at enabling more Kenyans to transact, save, and invest through mobile platforms.
According to the telecommunications company, investments in technology, fraud-prevention systems, and customer awareness programmes over the past year have helped strengthen the platform’s security and reliability.
“Our goal is to give Kenyans, and Africa at large, digital financial tools to empower them to be more prosperous. Reaching 40 million monthly active customers in Kenya is a milestone we celebrate, as we recommit to enable every Kenyan to transact safely, grow their savings, and build their wealth. To us, every M-PESA transaction tells a story of someone building their future,” said Peter Ndegwa.
The 40 million customers represent an increase of six (6) million compared to last year.

Safaricom said the developments are part of its Fintech 2.0 strategy, which focuses on expanding digital financial services and enabling users to manage savings, investments, and payments directly from their mobile devices.
The company noted that the growth of M-Pesa reflects the wider adoption of mobile financial services across Africa, where digital platforms are increasingly being used to access formal financial systems.
The platform, launched on March 6, 2007, began as a person-to-person money transfer service but has since expanded to include savings, investment, credit, and merchant payment solutions.
These include investment products such as Ziidi MMF and Ziidi Trader, credit facilities like Fuliza and KCB M-PESA, as well as business payment services including Lipa na M-PESA, Pochi la Biashara, and Global Pay.
