The National Police Service has responded to the reports circulating about the mysterious death of Albert Ojwang allegedly in custody at Central Police Station, Nairobi.
In a press statement on 8th June 2025, the National Police Service claimed Albert Omondi Ojwang died from self-inflicted injuries in custody at Nairobi Central Police Stati
They further state that Albert Omondi Ojwang was lawfully arrested by DCI detectives for false publication and placed in custody.
The statement goes on to detail that while in custody, the suspect sustained injuries after hitting his head against the cell wall.

Officers on duty are said to have promptly noticed the injuries and rushed him to Mbagathi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The Independent Policing Oversight (IPOA) has, in line with statutory requirements, launched an investigation into the cause of Mr Ojwang’s death.
Police promise to probe Albert Ojwang Death
NPS reaffirmed its commitment to upholding constitutional standards of human rights and fundamental freedoms.
“He was rushed to the hospital after what we think was an attempted suicide. He had injured himself in the head and was rushed to the hospital, where he died. did not die here in custody,” Nairobi Central boss Stephen Okal explained.
The narrative is contradicted by activists like Hussein Khalid, who confirmed the death and labelled it a potential extrajudicial killing.
“We have confirmed that Albert Ojwang’s lifeless body is lying at the City Mortuary. We suspect this to be yet another case of extrajudicial killing and we are following up to establish the cause of death,” he said.
Ojwang’s arrest for allegedly insulting a police boss on X, followed by his rapid transfer from Migori to Nairobi and death within hours, mirrors recent reports of abductions and crackdowns on social media critics.
These incidents raise concerns about freedom of expression under Kenya’s 2010 Constitution, which guarantees such rights under Article 33.
