UDA Governor Given Ultimatum Over Billions

The Majority leader wants expeditious action to avoid losing the ksh1.6 billion.

Leader of Majority in the National Assembly Kimani Ichung’wah has issued an ultimatum to Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi over his alleged failure to appoint municipal managers.

In a letter obtained by The Kenya Times, Ichung’wah accused Wamatangi of being reluctant in appointing the officers he noted are crucial in ensuring Kiambu County secures a Ksh1.6 billion grant from the World Bank

According to the Kikuyu legislator, Kiambu County is on the brink of losing the allocation on account of not having substantive municipal managers.

Additionally, Ichung’wah alleged Wamatangi has delayed in making other crucial appointments besides the municipal managers.

The upshot of the delay, he noted, has been slow delivery of crucial services to the people of Kiambu.

“I would seek an understanding of what the challenges are in you making substantive appointments that are now not only slowing down services but putting us in a situation where we are about to lose billions,” the letter read in part.

In his statement, Ichung’wah indicated that Kikuyu alone stands to lose Ksh 360 million, money meant to upgrade several roads in the constituency to bitumen standards.

He listed the planned upgrading of Kamangu Gardens Kanyayo- Renguti Ondiri Road- Nachu Ward as one of the roads earmarked to benefit from the grant.

As such, the legislator asked Wamatangi to move with speed to appoint the said managers, failure to which Kiambu county government would be forced to fund the projects.

“I therefore further seek your commitment that should the inordinate delay by yourself cause the loss of this World Bank funding, you shall commit county resources to complete the projects,” he demanded.

Ichung’wah mounts pressure on Wamatangi

The demand by Ichung’wah came against the backdrop of leadership wrangles pitting Wamatangi and other elected leaders in the county.

With only one year into his first term as the county’s governor, Wamatangi has faced several impeachment threats from Members of County Assembly.

At the center of the dispute are several accusations including one calling out the governor for sidelining MCAs in the County’s leadership.

In September, Kiambu Senator offered to reconcile the governor and MCAs noting that their differences would hinder development in the county.

On his part, however, Governor Wamtangi vowed to focus on delivering his promises and blamed the wrangles on detractors determined to derail his performance.
