Highway Gangsters Attack Armed Police Before Being Cornered

Three suspects who have been terrorizing members of the public and robbing valuables along the Kisumu-Nairobi Road have been arrested. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), in a statement on December 2, 2024, said that the three, who are a part of a five-men gang that has been operating near CFAO Center along the busy highway, were apprehended by undercover officers from Kasagam Police Station.

DCI revealed that the gangsters were unaware of a sting operation being carried out to end their criminal activities when the arrests happened.

During their failed operation, the gang of five suddenly attacked the officers using crude weapons.

They were however quickly cornered by heavily armed police officers. Three of the five obeyed orders to surrender, dropping their weapons as the other two managed to escape.

“Outsmarted, three of the five obeyed orders to surrender, dropping their weapons as the other two scooted off like terrified warthogs. The latter, having been identified, are being hotly pursued amidst calls to surrender at the Kasagam station,” the statement reads.

The Directorate further said that the arrested, two 22-year-old suspects have been placed in custody pending arraignment while the other 27-year-old is in hospital undergoing treatment.

DCI arrests Highway robbers

The arrests came days after DCI officers earlier in October arrested 4 highway robbers in Vihiga’s Emuhaya sub-county, after a foiled theft attempt on a transit truck ferrying cement from Machakos to Busia via the Kisumu to Busia route.

In the October 29 morning incident, the 55-year-old driver of the FAW truck belonging to a cement company spotted people hanging on the left side door before the door flung open and they started throwing out sacks of cement.

Despite the desperate efforts to scare away the robbers by repeatedly hooting, the robbers continued to felled bags to the thickets.

Fortunately, Embali Police Station officers in the vicinity who were on patrol sped to the location just in time to save the overpowered driver. This in turn led to the arrest of one member of the gang cornered while shouldering one of the stolen 50kg bags as the rest scampered off into the thickets.

The officers searched the thickets and nearby houses, recovering 9 bags of the stolen cement.

Of the bags, one was recovered at the house of another suspect and in the course of the search, the officers also recovered a blood-stained machete, 21 mosquito nets, a sack of wheat among other suspected stolen items.
