The National Unity Platform (NUP) has demanded that the Electoral Commission release the Physical Voters Register ahead of Uganda’s election.
In a statement dated Tuesday, January 6, 2026, NUP recalled earlier correspondence sent on December 11 and December 31, 2025, raising concerns about the Commission’s statutory responsibilities and alleged duplication of tens of thousands of voters on the register.
“We refer to our previous letters to the Electoral Commission, including one dated 11th December 2025, about mandatory duties cast upon the Commission by the Presidential Elections Act, Cap. 179; and another dated 31st December protesting the duplication of tens of thousands of voters in the National Voters Register and partly responding to a statement issued by the Commission on 28th December about the same Register,” read part of the statement.
However, the commission has not transmitted it despite them gazetting January,15,2026 as polling Day for presidential elections.
NUP’s Requirement to EC to Issue Register Two Weeks Before Polling
According to NUP, Section 19 of the Electoral Commission Act requires the EC to provide every political party participating in elections with a paper copy of the updated register containing voters’ photographs at least 14 days before polling day.
The party has noted that the EC had earlier assured the public, through a December 28 statement, that it would meet this legal requirement on time.
“In its statement of 28th December, the Commission made assurances to the effect that it would fulfil this requirement within the legally prescribed time,” read part of the statement.

Although the Commission gazetted January 15 as polling day, NUP has said that it has not received the updated document nor any official explanation for the delay.
“However, despite the Commission itself having gazetted 15th January 2026 as Polling Day for the said presidential election, and with less than nine (9) days now remaining to that Polling Day, the Commission has neither transmitted to NUP a paper copy of the updated Voters Register nor provided any lawful justification for this failure,”
Therefore, NUP has argued that failure to provide the register undermines confidence in the electoral process, especially given previous concerns over voter duplication and accuracy of data.
Call for Immediate Action
NUP has insisted that the EC must immediately provide a clean, updated paper register and fulfill all outstanding statutory obligations before voting.
Also, the party has highlighted that it is a major stakeholder in the process, having sponsored thousands of candidates nationwide, including a presidential candidate.
‘The Commission is aware that the National Unity Platform (NUP) is taking part in the 2026 general elections, in which it has sponsored thousands of candidates, including at the presidential level. ‘
