The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) has directed all senior school principals to submit updated Grade 10 learner data by subject.
In a notice published on Friday, June 12, KICD announced that the first phase of distributing Grade 10 textbooks to senior schools has been completed using initial learner data provided by the Ministry of Education.
The notice, signed by KICD CEO, Prof. Charles O. Ong’ondo, and addressed to all public senior school principals, said the institute is seeking to confirm updated Grade 10 enrolment data across all subjects by the end of First Term 2026.
KICD Directs All Principals to Submit Grade 10 Learner Numbers and Subject Choices
KICD stated that the verification will guide the second phase of textbook distribution to ensure full coverage and achieve a one-to-one learner-to-textbook ratio in line with government policy.
All principals have been directed to submit updated data showing the current number of Grade 10 learners per subject and the number of textbooks received for each subject.
“The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) informs all Senior School Principals that first phase of the distribution of Grade 10 textbooks has been completed guided by the data initially provided by the Ministry of Education (MoE),” read the notice in part.
“The Institute is seeking to confirm the Grade 10 student enrolment data in every public Senior School by end of First Term 2026 in terms of numbers of learners taking various subjects.”

How to Submit Data
Principals are required to submit Grade 10 learner and textbook data through the online form at https://forms.office.com/r/MqThQtBxQh.
KICD has also set up an urgent support channel for schools that either have not received textbooks or have received excess supplies.
The affected schools have been advised to contact the institute via email at [email protected] or call 0733 762 412.
The deadline for submission of the data has been set for 19 June 2026.
However, principals who have already submitted their information have been told not to resubmit.
In February this year, the Ministry of Education (Ministry of Education) announced that it had distributed more than 8.3 million course materials and literary texts to public schools, representing about 71 percent of the national requirement.
Under the Competency-Based Education (CBE) system, learners take different subject combinations, making accurate enrolment data critical for the proper allocation of textbooks.

KICD Moves to Fix Grade 10 Textbook Gaps as CBE Rollout Advances
In April, the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development confirmed that the first phase of textbook distribution had been completed.
However, it noted gaps in supply, with some schools receiving excess textbooks while others had shortages or none at all.
The mismatch was attributed to reliance on initial data from the Ministry of Education, which did not fully capture actual student numbers and subject choices, especially after some learners revised their senior school selections following placement.
The institute said achieving equitable distribution is now critical to preventing persistent shortages as the CBE rollout continues.
KICD CEO, Charles O. Ong’ondo noted in April that once the Grade 10 distribution exercise is completed, attention will shift to the printing and distribution of Grade 11 textbooks starting in September, followed by Grade 12 books by May 2027.
He added that curriculum designs for the two sets of books are already complete and are currently undergoing final refinement by deputy directors of curriculum development.
