Kiambu County has some of the prestigious National schools, with Alliance High School topping the list.
These schools have maintained strong academic performance over the years, with several attracting attention for their KCSE results prior to the shift to the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
Due to their popularity, national schools such as Alliance High School, Kenya High School, and Mang’u High School each received up to 20,000 applications during the 2026 senior school placement.
Their average intake capacity, however, is only about 500 learners.
1. Alliance Girls High School
Alliance Girls High School (AGHS) was founded in 1948 by the Alliance of Protestant Missions in Kenya, which started the institution to serve African girls in Kenya.
The founding of AGHS, which is one of the oldest high schools in Kenya, marked the beginning of a new phase in the education of African girls and women in Kenya.
Nationally, the school remains renowned for its continued academic excellence and for producing well-rounded students.
In the 2024 KCSE, the national institution had 493 candidates, of whom 89 scored a straight A grade, with a mean score of 10.038.
On the other hand, 147 of them scored an A-, 107 a B+, and 60 a B.
2. Alliance Boys High School
Alliance High School is one of Kenya’s top national boys’ secondary schools.
Established in 1926 under the auspices of the Alliance of Protestant Churches, it became the first school in the country to offer secondary education to Africans.
In the 2024 KCSE, the school had 452 candidates, with 97.8% achieving the minimum university entry grade under full government sponsorship.
100 students scored straight A’s, while 134 scored A-grades. Additionally, 107 students earned a B+, 62 earned a B, and 27 earned a B-.
12 students scored a C+, 6 scored a C, and the lowest grade recorded was a C-, obtained by just four students.
The school’s impressive performance saw the 2024 candidates achieve a mean score of 10.31—a slight improvement from the 9.5 mean score recorded in the 2023 KCSE.
3. Mang’u High School
Mang’u High School is one of Kenya’s national boys’ secondary schools.
The institution traces its roots back to 1925, when it was established at Kabaa by Dutch priest Michael Joseph Witte of the Holy Ghost Fathers (known as the Spiritans in Continental Europe).
In the 2024 KCSE, the school had 578 candidates, with more than 95% achieving the minimum university entry grade under full government sponsorship.
107 students scored straight A’s, while 164 scored A-grades. Additionally, 114 students earned a B+, 99 earned a B, and 71 earned a B-.
23 students scored a C+, 21 scored a C, and the lowest grade recorded was a D+ and D, obtained by just two students.
The school’s impressive performance saw the 2024 candidates achieve a mean score of 10.011.

4. Limuru Girls
Limuru Girls School ranks among Kenya’s top national public girls’ secondary schools.
It was founded in 1922 by Arnold Buttler McDonell for his four daughters and other girls interested in joining.
In the 2024 KCSE, the school had 456 candidates, with 92% achieving the minimum university entry grade under full government sponsorship.
10 students scored straight A’s, while 47 scored A’s. Additionally, 93 students earned a B+, 104 earned a B, and 101 earned a B-.
65 students scored a C+, 27 scored a C, and the lowest grade recorded was a D+, obtained by just two students.
The school’s impressive performance saw the 2024 candidates achieve a mean score of 8.7083—a slight decline from the 8.900 mean score recorded in the 2023 KCSE.

5. Thika High School
Thika High School is a boys-only boarding institution located in Thika District, Central Kenya.
Founded in 1951 during the colonial period, the school was established by the Alliance of Protestant Churches in partnership with the Church of Scotland Mission, which later became the Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA).
The school posted an impressive performance in the 2023 KCSE examinations, with 78 per cent of its candidates qualifying for university admission.
It attained a mean score of 7.93 points, placing it among the top-performing schools nationally in the 2023 KCSE results.
In terms of grades, the school recorded four A grades, 28 A-minus grades, 69 B-plus grades, 79 B grades, 87 B-minus grades, and 84 C-plus grades.
6. Kambui Girls High School
Kambui Girls High School is a public Girls’ national-level boarding school located in Githunguri Sub-County in Kiambu County of the Central Region, Kenya.
A total of 191 students sat for the KCSE 2024 at Kambui Girls’ High School.
In the results, no student attained an A or A-minus grade. Three students earned a B-plus, while seven earned a B.
A total of 22 students received a B-minus grade, 44 scored a C-plus, and 53 attained a C grade. Additionally, 34 students scored a C-minus, 22 received a D-plus, and six students received a D grade.
7. Kiambu High School
Kiambu High School (KHS) is a public boys’ extra-county boarding school located in Kiambu County, Kenya.
Kiambu High School was founded in 1976.
A total of 205 students sat for the KCSE 2024 at Kiambu High School.
In 2024, the school recorded one A grade and 26 A-minus grades. A total of 51 students earned B+ grades, while 53 earned B grades.
Additionally, 39 students received B-minus grades. In the lower grades, 14 students scored C-plus, 11 scored C, five scored C-minus, and one student scored D-plus.
8. St Anne’s Lioki High School
St Anne’s Lioki High School is classified by the Ministry of Education as an extra-county boarding girls’ secondary school.
A total of 131 students sat for the KCSE 2024 at St. Anne’s Sec. School-lioki.
In 2024, 11 students earned A-minuses, while 30 earned B-pluses and 31 earned B grades. A further 27 students received B-minus grades. In the lower grades, 21 students scored C+, 9 scored C, and 1 scored C-.

9. Precious Blood Kagwe Girls Secondary School
Precious Blood Kagwe is a Catholic-sponsored public extra-county school founded in 1966 at the request of the Gatamaiyu community.
The institution is operated by the Catholic Archdiocese of Nairobi and was established by the Missionary Sisters of the Precious Blood.
A total of 106 students sat for the KCSE 2024 at Precious Blood Kagwe Girls Secondary School.
During which one student scored an A-minus grade. Eleven students each attained B-plus and B grades, while 23 received B-minus grades.
21 students scored C-plus, 23 attained a C grade, 14 received C-minus grades, and two students recorded a D-plus grade.
10. Loreto High School, Limuru
Loreto High School, Limuru, is a national girls’ school in Limuru Sub-County, Kiambu County.
The school was founded in 1936 by the Loreto sisters who had travelled from Ireland.
In the 2023 KCSE, the school had 266 candidates, with 92% achieving the minimum university entry grade under full government sponsorship.
8 students scored straight A’s, while 78 scored A-‘. Additionally, 69 students earned a B+, 46 earned a B, and 32 earned a B-.
14 students scored a C+, 15 scored a C, and the lowest grade recorded was a D, obtained by just one student.
11. Our Lady of Mt. Camel Maryhills Girls
Our Lady of Mount Carmel (OLMC) Maryhill Girls High School is a national girls’ secondary school located in Thika, Kiambu County.
The school traces its roots to 1933, when the Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of Africa (MSOLA) founded it.
In the 2024 KCSE, the school had 587 candidates, with 98% achieving the minimum university entry grade under full government sponsorship.
80 students scored straight A’s, while 181 scored A-grades. Additionally, 139 students earned a B+, 111 earned a B, and 37 earned a B-.
32 students scored a C+, 5 scored a C, and the lowest grade recorded was a C-, obtained by two students.
