President William Ruto has appointed former Base Commander at Laikipia Air Base, Brigadier Mohamud Farah, as the Deputy Air Force Commander.
In a statement on June 5, the Ministry of Defense stated that Brigadier Mohamud Salah Farah, among other promotions, appointments, and deployments within the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF), were made on the recommendation of the Defense Council.
“His Excellency Hon Dr William Samoei Ruto, C.G.H, President of the Republic of Kenya, and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces upon recommendation of the Defence Council, has today appointed Major General John Maiso Nkoimo as the Deputy Commander Kenya Army… Additionally, Brigadier Mohamud Salah Farah, who was the Base Commander at Laikipia Air Base has been appointed the Deputy Air Force Commander,” stated the Ministry.
Rise Through the Ranks
Brigadier Mohamud Salah is an officer with years of experience in both operational and administrative roles within the Kenya Air Force.

Farah rose to the rank of Brigadier in July 2022, when he was appointed Base Commander of Laikipia Air Base in Nanyuki. The appointment came during a military reshuffle under former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Prior to that, he served various staff and field assignments, steadily building his profile within the Air Force leadership structure.
Over time, Brigadier Mohamud Farah has gained experience in command, operations, and personnel management.
Brigadier Mohamud Farah Leadership at Laikipia Air Base
During his tenure at Laikipia Air Base, Brigadier Mohamud Farah was responsible for ensuring operational readiness, supporting pilot training programs, and managing day-to-day activities at the installation.
He also oversaw welfare programmes for service members and their families, safety initiatives, and official engagements involving senior military leadership and international partners.

New Roles and Responsibilities Farah will Take at the Top Command
In this position, Brigadier Mohamud Farah will work closely with the Air Force Commander to oversee the day-to-day running of the service, including operations, administration and long-term planning.
His role will involve ensuring that the Air Force maintains a high level of operational readiness, particularly in safeguarding Kenya’s airspace and responding to emerging security threats.
Brigadier Farah will also shape training programmes and professional development for Air Force personnel. This includes supporting the development of pilots, technical crews and specialized units, as well as ensuring discipline and high standards across all ranks.
Beyond operations, he will contribute to strategic planning efforts, helping to guide the modernization of equipment, the expansion of capabilities, and the strengthening of partnerships with both regional and international allies.
Farah’s experience in base command is expected to inform decisions on infrastructure, logistics, and resource management across Air Force installations.
As second-in-command, Farah will be required to step in for the Air Force Commander when necessary, taking charge of critical decisions and overseeing complex operations.
Brigadier Mohamud Salah will also represent the Air Force in high-level engagements, including meetings with defence partners and international delegations.
