The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has officially activated its e-Certificate platform, allowing KCSE certificate holders to register, access and download their certificates online.
In a statement on July 21, KNEC announced that the platform is now live after a maintenance period and invited applicants to log in, complete their registration and generate their e-certificates.
“We are delighted to inform you that you can now login into the platform, then proceed with your registration and download your KNEC E-Certificate,” part of the statement read.
The platform enables candidates who sat the KCSE examination from 1989 onwards to generate an electronic version of their certificate after completing an online verification process.
How to Access and Download Your KNEC KCSE E-Certificate
To access the service, applicants should visit the KNEC e-Certificate portal and create an account by selecting the Applicant (Student/Alumni) option.
New users will be required to verify their email address using a one-time password (OTP) before completing their profile with personal details, including their citizenship, date of birth, phone number, and identification details where applicable.
Once registration is complete, applicants can generate an e-certificate by entering their KCSE index number, examination year and exam type.
The system will automatically verify the information before prompting users to pay the KSh1,500 processing fee via M-Pesa or the online payment page.
After payment is confirmed, the e-certificate becomes available for download in PDF format.
The platform also allows users to send certificate verification reports directly to employers, universities and other third parties by uploading the downloaded e-certificate, providing the recipient’s details and completing the required payment before the report is delivered electronically.

Why It Was Rolled Out
In May, KNEC stated that the verification system was designed to enable employers, universities and other institutions to authenticate KCSE certificates instantly.
Speaking during the Third Annual Educational Assessment Symposium at Mitihani House, KNEC Deputy Director of ICT Ahmed Mutanga said the council was replacing the slow manual verification process with a secure digital platform that delivers real-time verification of academic credentials.
As part of the initiative, KCSE certificates issued from 2023 onwards have been embedded with Quick Response (QR) codes secured using the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), a technology widely used to protect sensitive digital information.

The encrypted QR codes store details such as a candidate’s name, index number and grades, helping safeguard certificates against tampering and forgery.
To support the system, KNEC also introduced TrueCert, a secure electronic platform where genuine certificates are preloaded for instant cross-checking.
Older certificates are secured through blockchain technology, allowing them to be verified alongside newer digital certificates.
