Thousands of students placed through the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) for the 2026/2027 academic year will soon begin preparing for university life, with accommodation among the biggest decisions they will make before reporting.

Before reporting to the respective campuses, students should ensure they have made accommodation arrangements.

University Accommodation Options and Costs

Students joining universities have several accommodation choices depending on their budget and personal preferences.

The most affordable option is usually university hostels, but spaces are limited because demand exceeds the number of available rooms.

University hostels are allocated through the institutional accommodation department.

Many universities give priority to first-come, first-served applicants and those who book early.

However, not every student is guaranteed a room, which forces many learners to explore alternatives, such as off-campus rentals.

Private hostels that are registered through the universities have become a common and preferred option since they are often located near campuses and provide services such as internet, security, water supply, furnished rooms, and shared cooking areas.

However, prices differ depending on the university town, distance from campus, and available amenities.

In towns with large student populations such as Nairobi, Eldoret, Nakuru, and Kisumu, private hostel charges can range according to distance, facilities, services provided, and the type of rooms like single beds, bedsitters, and studios.

Students can also choose to rent houses outside campus and share expenses with roommates. Sharing expenses, including rent, electricity, water, and internet bills, can reduce the cost.

However, students should consider additional costs such as transport, food, and household items before choosing accommodation far from campus.

Tips for Choosing Affordable and Convenient Student Housing

Students should begin their accommodation preparation before reporting dates, not wait until they arrive at university.

This is because demand increases when universities open, causing prices to rise and reducing the number of available rooms.

Freshers are required to understand the university’s location and identify nearby residential areas. A cheaper hostel far from campus may become expensive if a student spends a significant amount on transport each day.

Before selecting a rental room, students should consider factors such as the security, distance to the campus, water and electricity availability, room size, and the availability of internet.

Visiting the accommodation in person before making payment is highly recommended. Students should inspect rooms, check the surrounding environment, confirm security measures, and speak with current residents about their experiences.

Freshers should also seek advice from continuing students and student leaders for useful information on affordable areas, reliable hostels, and places to avoid at their respective universities.

Students joining the same university can also consider sharing accommodation with trusted classmates to reduce living expenses.

Accommodation Red Flags KUCCPS Students Should Avoid

The increase in demand for student housing before university reporting periods also creates opportunities for fraudsters targeting first-year students and their families.

One of the biggest warning signs is being asked to send money before viewing the room or confirming that the accommodation exists. Students should avoid paying individuals who claim to guarantee university hostel spaces, especially when the request is made through unofficial channels.

Students should be cautious of extremely cheap offers that seem unrealistic compared to other nearby accommodation options. Such deals may include hidden charges introduced after moving in.

Other warning signs include landlords, caretakers, and agents refusing to provide payment receipts, rental agreements, overcrowded rooms, poor security, unreliable water supply, and unexpected fees after signing up.

Students should also confirm all payment procedures and use official channels whenever dealing with university accommodation.
