Babu Owino in 2024 made headlines by telling the University of Nairobi to complete their studies with two degrees, an academic certificate and a marriage certificate. The lawmaker is a proud UON alumnus who bagged his spouse in the same institution.

Apart from studies, higher institutions provide forums where students can interact and socialize. Kenyatta University (KU) is not only recognized for academic excellence but also for its vibrant student culture.

Away from lecture halls, assignments, and examinations, students have developed a strong social life around different spaces where they relax, interact, attend events, and create memorable experiences.

Recreational Spaces That Offer Students a Break From Academic Life

Among the most popular places on campus is the KU Arboretum, a serene green space where students can unwind in a natural setting.

The arboretum is commonly used for nature walks, outdoor group discussions, picnics, photography sessions, and student events, including birthdays.

The arboretum is also a preferred location for students who want to study outdoors and take a break from the busy lecture schedule.

Students from the Christian Union prayer group and choir also utilize the serene environment in holding their prayers and choir practice.

Another favorite destination is Kwa Symoo Recreation, which offers students leisure facilities, including a swimming pool. The center is popular among students looking to relax after classes, swim, enjoy refreshments, or spend quality time with friends. Kwa Symoo swimming pool has a hot swimming pool charged at Ksh50 per session.

Around the spot, refreshments are also sold at comrade-friendly prices.

The Sports Complex hosts university co-curricular activities. In addition to hosting university competitions, the facility allows students to participate in football, basketball, volleyball, athletics, rugby, and fitness activities. The complex also attracts spectators who gather to cheer university teams during inter-faculty and institution competitions.

University Lawns, around the library, are also used by students who want to study in a cool environment. Students enjoy free wifi in the lawns. Meetups are also held in the lawns.

Social Hubs Where Students Meet, Eat and Connect

The Student Center remains one of the busiest locations on campus. Throughout the day, students visit the facility to enjoy meals at the food court, hold meetings, access banking and other student services, including printing of academic materials in the cyber cafes.

Canteens around the facility are managed by students through the students’ council. Foods, snacks, and services are discounted to meet the students’ budget.

There are two student centers on the main campus: the Main Center and the Student Center Annex, which offer the same services.

Foods sold around include fries, smokes, soft drinks, ice pops,  and fruit palours.

KU Shopping Center: Students visit the area to buy affordable meals, snacks, stationery, and other essentials. The shopping center is also a common meeting point where classmates gather before or after lectures, making it one of the liveliest parts of the university.

The Campanile, IS Kenyatta University’s iconic tower, serves as one of the university’s most recognizable landmarks. Students visit the Campanile for photography, sightseeing, and to enjoy panoramic views of the campus and surrounding areas. Students hold meetings around the structure, enjoying free wifi.

Ring Road around Nyayo Hostels is used by students for morning jogs, evening walks, and skating. Content creators use the path dancing and doing other types of content.

Entertainment Hub Around Kenyatta University

Kenyatta University also offers several venues that host entertainment and major student events throughout the year.

Bishop’s Square is among the most recognized event spaces on campus. The venue hosts Freshers’ Night celebrations, concerts, exhibitions, gaming activities, cultural festivals and student entertainment events, attracting large crowds during the academic year. It also provides students with opportunities to showcase talents in music, dance and other creative arts.

Kenyatta University’s Amphitheater serves as a venue for performances, talent shows and student forums. The open-air space hosts cultural activities and the yearly Freshas Night.

Outside the university, many students also frequent Uni City Mall, located near the main campus, for shopping, dining, and entertainment. Others visit nearby destinations such as Garden City Mall, Thika Road Mall (TRM), Kahawa Wendani, and Kahawa Sukari, where they enjoy restaurants, cafés, recreational facilities, and social activities, especially on weekends and holidays.
